“It’s nice to be recognized as a draftsman,” David Jamieson said, the winner of Allied Artists of America’s 2024 Silver Medal of Honor. “I’m hugely honored.”
His artwork, titled “Writer’s Block”—white chalk, graphite and carbon black on gray paper—depicts a pensive moment experienced by his cousin, who is an author. Jamieson said he set out to capture a scene that “was more than just a portrait.” The drawing, with its stark, unadorned composition, along with shadows and highlights on the solitary figure, successfully achieves his goal.
As stated on his website (https://davidjamieson.net/), Jamieson began studying drawing and painting in 1996 at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. He went on to receive an MFA cum laude degree from the New York Academy of Art, where he was awarded the first Prince of Wales Scholarship from that institution in 2000.
In addition to his own artwork, Jamieson said teaching has been a passion. He explained on his website that “teaching has been an essential part of my life and my art practice for 25 years, with a particular focus on realism in drawing and painting. Unlike many artists who teach as a means to supplement their independent studio work, I view teaching as a core component of my own artistic practice.”
Since 2006 he has served as a teacher at Vitruvian Fine Art Studio, an online platform that he co-founded and operates with his wife, painter and sculptor Melinda Whitmore. They reside in Oak Park, IL. Jamieson has taught figurative drawing, painting and anatomy to undergraduate, graduate and private students in Toronto, Chicago, New York City, and at The King’s Foundation in London, England.
His work is included in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III, in the permanent collection of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, and other private collections in Canada and the United States. He has been featured in American Artist Drawing Magazine and Poets & Artists Magazine.
