The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services (DMHDDSUS) is implementing this DHHS-approved Person-Centered Planning (PCP) interactive training that will provide concrete strategies to support the implementation of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Person-Centered Planning Guidance Document.

During this in-person training, participants will be exposed to a wide variety of engagement and strengths-based interviewing tools and have an opportunity to practice using them to gather critical information to inform the Person-Centered Plan. A combination of interactive exercises (including video illustrations and role plays) will be used to demonstrate, and allow participants to practice, person-centered planning conversations that adhere to critical PCP processes that reflect the importance of hope, autonomy, community inclusion, and strengths-based care. With these processes as a foundation, the training will also provide concrete coaching, and an opportunity to practice, how to translate authentic person-centered meeting conversations into formal person-centered plan documentation in alignment with North Carolina PCP Guidance. Simple take-home resources will be provided to inform participants’ ongoing PCP efforts

NOTE: This training is designed for behavioral health practitioners as a follow-up to the required introductory PCP training which was offered virtually throughout 2022-2023. This required training is now housed on the UNC Behavioral Health Springboard's website for anyone to take free of charge at any time and is recommended as a precursor to

in-person training.

During the training, participants will:

  • Gain experience using tools to conduct an effective in-person PCP meeting.
  • Learn to describe common barriers to person-centered “goal setting”.
  • Learn to describe the value of “pre-planning” support to actively engage people in preparing for their PCP meeting.
  • Identify at least 3 “key practices” in person-centered conversations/meeting facilitation that are necessary for the co-creation of a quality person-centered recovery plan.
  • Identify three qualities of a well-written person-centered goal that can effectively serve as motivation in a person’s recovery process.

This training will offer a Certificate of Completion for continuing education credit through NBCC,

the National Board for Certified Counselors.
