Stony Plain FCSS wants everyone to know Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. We are encouraging citizens to learn more about dementia and its stark impact on Canadians.
Today, more than half a million Canadians are living with dementia. In less than 12 years, that number will reach almost one million. “Almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, but not everyone understands what it is or what they can do about it,” says Lisa Gilchrist, Executive Director for Stony Plain Family and Community Support Services. “Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is an empowering reminder to take better care of our own health, and brain, and to seek out resources to better support our loved ones”
Building on the Stony Plain Together We Shine Inclusion strategy, Stony Plain Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) has a specific focus on Dementia with the Dementia Connections Project. By working collaboratively, the goal is to create and maintain inclusive and welcoming dementia-friendly environments within the Tri Region. We currently have volunteers engaged with residents living with dementia where they are building lasting relationships and navigating resources together. The project aims to increase awareness, provide information, and develop strategies with the community to create and maintain inclusive and welcoming dementia-friendly environments.
Together we can work proactively to raise awareness of the impacts of dementia and build a stronger, healthier and more connected community for all.
Residents of Stony Plain, Parkland County and Spruce Grove who are living with dementia and looking for positive connections and social opportunities in a dementia friendly setting are asked to call Stony Plain FCSS at 780-963-8583.
