Celebrating Pride Month: San Ysidro Health’s GeMS Clinic and Its HIV Services

In recognition of Pride Month, we celebrate San Ysidro Health’s Gender-Affirming Medicine & Sexual Health Clinic (GeMS) as it shines as a vital resource for the LGBTQ+ community. The GeMS clinic is a beacon of inclusive and specialized healthcare, offering comprehensive services tailored to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.


The GeMS clinic is part of San Ysidro Health's extensive network of care, founded in 1969. Serving over 160,000 patients, SYHealth operates numerous healthcare facilities across the county, including HIV centers, dental clinics, and nutrition centers. The GeMS clinic enhances these services, ensuring that all San Ysidro Health sites and departments provide a welcoming and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ patients.

Comprehensive and Compassionate Care

The GeMS clinic medical providers and staff are experienced in delivering specialty care in sexual health. The clinic's services extend beyond basic health care to include:

· LGBTQ-focused Primary Care: Comprehensive health services tailored to the LGBTQ+ community.

· Transgender Health Services: Including hormone therapy to support gender transition.

· Sexual Health Services: Addressing a wide range of sexual health needs.

· Contraception: Providing various birth control options.

· HIV Counseling and Testing: Confidential testing and counseling services.

· HIV Prevention Counseling: Including PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) to prevent HIV infection.

· Linkage to Mental Health Providers: Connecting patients with psychiatry and psychology professionals experienced in LGBTQ+ care.


Specialized HIV Services

The heart of the GeMS clinic is its commitment to comprehensive HIV services. The clinic offers:

· PrEP: A preventive medication for those at high risk of HIV.

· PEP: An emergency treatment effective within 72 hours of potential HIV exposure.

· HIV Treatment and Management: Including antiretroviral therapy (ART) to manage HIV and improve patient outcomes.
