Roaring Brook Nature Center

Fall Newsletter

Roaring Brook Nature Center's public programs in November range from a “Parliament of Owls” and "Beyond  Birdfeeders” and at the end of the month we have Native Americans, a Thanksgiving weekend “Turkey Daze” scavenger hunt and an “Under the Beaver Moon” full moon walk.

Another piece of exciting fall news involves our wildlife rehabilitation program. In 2022, the Roaring Brook Nature Center, along with several other rehabilitation facilities throughout the state, stopped taking injured hawks, owls, crows, blue jays and other species of birds due to the prevalence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Connecticut. There is no vaccine for this disease, and while it is not a threat to people, it is a threat to birds. Without a quarantine facility removed from our resident birds, we just could not take the chance of bringing a sick bird into our Wildlife Clinic. Now, with the help of several grants, we can again begin to take in raptors and other species as we will have a renovated area in which to quarantine them. In a typical year, the Nature Center admits 60-75 raptors into its Wildlife Clinic.
