Music and Medicine: Lessons from an Irish Session

March is a special month for me.

When I’m not attending medical appointments through ConnectCare MD, you might find me somewhere very different—playing the ‘fiddle’ at a local Irish session.

What’s a session?

Think “pick-up band” but with Irish Music playing. A dimly lit dive bar, with a come as you are vibe.

All are welcome, and all come just to have a great time making music together.

There are no rehearsals, no sheet music, no conductor. Not even a set list.

While there are always the regulars, an Irish session never is the same group twice. Some come now and then, and some join for the first time.

And the music sounds amazing. Every...single...time.

Our secret?

We listen.

The Power of Listening

We listen for the return of the familiar chorus. The lyrics lamenting over lost loves or even whiskey before breakfast.

We listen to the rhythm. The bass. The melody.

We listen to each other.

Listening to one another becomes our conductor, and through listening harmony emerges from what might otherwise be a bunch of fragmented notes and musicians.

Believe It or Not, Medicine Isn't So Different

Sometimes today’s healthcare feels like a bunch of disconnected notes.

One appointment here.

Another specialist there.

More tests.

A message to the doctor that may — or may not — be answered.

Without a “conductor” to guide and listen along the way, those appointments, and the medical information that follows, often stays fragmented, rather than coming together into a smooth, beautiful piece of music—or more importantly: connected medical care.

At ConnectCare MD, I Bring My Irish Session Skills to Every Appointment.

I listen—to you. And to your doctor.

Add in some harmony...🎵

Next comes a note of physician-led advocacy. Asking the right questions at the right time.

Finally, the sheet music...🎼

But unlike Irish music, which relied on memory and melodies passed on after the session, ConnectCare MD puts it all together in a clear, easy-to-understand visit summary for you and your family. Everyone reads from from the same score.

Everything connected, everything clear.

All with a rhythm everyone can follow, even when they can’t be at appointments with you.

The result? Care that finally comes together.

In healthcare, it’s that same spirit of connection that makes all the difference.

If this message resonates with you, consider sharing it with an Irish friend—or any friend—because good healthcare is something we should all feel lucky to have☘️.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day — Sláinte! ☘️🎻

After a successful 30-year career in primary care, emergency medicine, and hospital-based care in Rochester, NY, I transitioned from the hospital bedside to your doctor's office where I continue my passion for helping patients through ConnectCare MD.

As your personal physician advocate, I attend doctor appointments or hospitalizations with you, then share an easy-to-understand report with everyone the very next day.
