A Letter From the Chamber President

The Chamber has been hard at work to ensure our members are fully prepared for all that has happened over the last couple of months.

We’ve provided information, webinars and a live presentation on Propostion A. This is the sick leave bill that was going to negatively impact many of our member businesses.

What about those pesky Jackson County assessments? Many businesses have been negatively impacted by higher-than-normal commercial property assessments. To help keep our community informed, the Chamber invited members to attend an event hosted by Jackson County Legislator Sean Smith to learn how to appeal the assessment. The Chamber will host Legislator Smith at the July Governmental Relations Committee meeting where he will provide more information and guidance on the issue.

With changes on the global front with tariffs, the Chamber continues to disseminate pertinent information including webinars detailing how businesses can prepare as part of our Business Matters resources sent bi-monthly via email.

Speaking of worldwide, the Chamber is helping lead the way for World Cup 2026 in the KC region. With the formation of LSGoal26, the Chamber has engaged its members to participate and ensure Lee’s Summit is ready and leading the way during this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Lastly, the historic downtown train Depot, where the Chamber resides, will be going through a major renovation beginning July 7 and lasting approximately eight weeks.

The depot will be closed to visitors during those eight weeks, and a large portion of Chamber staff will be working remotely. Others will temporarily office in the Lee's Summit Economic Development Council building just next door. Don’t you worry, all Chamber events and programs will go on as planned. We just won’t be at the Depot.

You’ll still be able to call us at 816-524-2424 and reach us by email, like usual. Once completed, all members will be invited to celebrate the new look of the Depot and its connection to our community.

As the Chamber ramps up preparations for Oktoberfest — I say not so fast!

It’s time to bring on my favorite summer event and one of the most popular events of the year — the LS Parks Legacy Blast 4th of July Celebration. This is a must-see event with fireworks that are choreographed to music and simulcast on 94.9 FM. Get out there and enjoy the tastes of local food trucks, vendors, DJs and tons of activities for the kids.

Have a Great Summer!

Nonnie's Shaved Ice Treats

Nonnie's Shaved Ice Treats was founded by Teresa Dearman in 2023. Driven by a desire to create something special for her family, she invested in the business and invited her grandkids to work alongside her. Nonnie's Shaved Ice Treats uses nearly half the amount of sugar seen in typical iced treats. Her recipe incorporates the use of pure cane sugar. Teresa said she is thrilled to partner with Shatto Milk to offer a rich, smoother taste with ice cream inside the shaved ice treats. She is currently booking festivals in Jackson County and has availability to serve you next at birthday parties, private events and more.

Whistle Stop Coffee

Whistle Stop Coffee remains the beloved local coffee shop our community has cherished for years—now with a new chapter under local family ownership. The new team is dedicated to preserving the traditions that have made Whistle Stop Coffee Shop so special, while also introducing new offerings such as a catering service for coffee, pastries, and more—perfect for meetings and events.

Connecting Our Community

June Highlights

Business & Bagels

We hosted our quarterly Business and Bagels workshop June 12 featuring a panel of experts who explored how disability inclusion elevates business performance by up to 28%.

Our experts gave insights into disability inclusion, provided practical strategies for implementing inclusive hiring practices and provided real world success stories from organizations leading the way.

Special thanks to our panelists:

• Dr. Stephen Hunsley, Executive Director, SOAR Special Needs

• Matt Sessler, Career Navigator, LSR7 Administrative Office

• Aaron Martin, President & CEO, Job One

•Tyreka Smith, COO, Howdy Homemade Ice Cream and TNC Community

This event was sponsored by the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and hosted at Bridge Space.

Chamber After Hours Networking Event

Perfect weather, great company, and even better conversations!

Our After Hours Networking Event at Stehl Family Dental was the perfect way to wrap up the workday—with tasty treats, refreshing beverages, and meaningful connections.

A huge thank you to our hosts at Stehl Family Dental for sponsoring this event and offering amazing giveaways — like in-office whitening, white strips, and special offers for new patients!

Missed this one? Don’t worry—After Hours happens every 2nd Thursday of the month and is free for LS Chamber members and invited guests. Bring your business cards and come ready to connect!

A Conversation With Our Mayors

In June, we hosted a Monthly Membership Luncheon featuring mayors from Lee's Summit, Independence, Blue Springs and Raytown to discuss key issues impacting their cities and the collaborative efforts underway to strengthen our regional community.

Together, they explored topics like economic development, public safety and the future outlook of each city. Ultimately, we learned that with cooperation and a shared vision, they're working to build a stronger, more connected community for all.

Special thanks to our luncheon sponsor, Howdy Homemade Ice Cream. They helped cool us all down with free ice cream samples served up by several Howdy Homemade Ice Cream Heroes.

Thank you to our panelists: Mayor Bill Baird, Lee's Summit; Mayor Chris Lievsay, Blue Springs, Mayor Mike McDonough, Raytown; and Mayor Rory Rowland, Independence.

We'd also like to thank Chef Aristo's Curbside, Catering and Eatery for the amazing lunch, and the Missouri Innovation Campus for hosting us.

Chamber Before Hours Networking Event

Thank you to The Love Law Group for hosting this month’s Chamber Before Hours Networking Event and allowing us to help celebrate their 25 years of dedicated service, legal expertise, and community impact!

The building now home to The Love Law Group was originally built and owned by fellow Chamber member Michael Blau Insurance Agency.

His sons’ handprints are still visible in the cement out front — a meaningful reminder of the stories and relationships that shape our local business landscape.

The Love Law Group specializes in elder law, estate planning, wills, and probate — helping families navigate life’s important transitions with care and expertise.

Before Hours takes place every 4th Tuesday of the month — a great way to start your day with coffee, conversation, and meaningful connections.

Chamber Young Professionals

Game Night Networking

Our Chamber Young Professionals Game Night Networking at K1 Speed was a blast.

Our community of Young Professionals made new connections over board games and snacks.

Special thanks to K1 Speed for sponsoring this event.

Next month we're hosting a Lunch & Learn: Cultivating Mentorships. We'll hear from a panel of leaders whose careers have been impacted by having a mentor. Learn how to form and navigate those relationships.

We can't wait to see you then.

Nonprofit Spotlight

It was a meaningful afternoon of networking with purpose at the fourth Nonprofit Spotlight Lunch, where Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit was featured for their decades of service delivering meals and care to homebound neighbors since 1974.

Guests had the opportunity to learn how the organization serves over 350 meals each week and discover ways the business community can support their important mission.

A big thank-you to the partners who made this event possible: Bridge Space, Royal Rolloffs KC, Square One Small Business Center, and Chef Aristo's Curbside Eatery for the incredible lunch.

We were honored to support and attend this impactful gathering highlighting the power of connection and community collaboration.
