A Letter From the President

The week of April 28-May 4, 2024 was a very special week for all small businesses here locally in Lee’s Summit and across the country. That week is recognized as National Small Business Week, which acknowledges the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. It's a time dedicated to officially recognizing their hard work, ingenuity, and dedication including their contributions to the economy.

This special recognition has been in place for more than 60 years and the Lee’s Summit Chamber is fortunate to represent many of those businesses right here in the Kansas City region.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber takes pride in knowing how strong our local economy is, thanks in large part to our small business community. From entrepreneurs, to start ups, to those businesses scaling and growing, our small business community is the heart of every community, especially Lee’s Summit.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber just celebrated five member businesses by awarding them the Excellence in Business Award. And like the title says, these businesses represent the best in our community — Excellence, Professionalism, Customer Service, Loyalty and my favorite, they each have Character in how their business performs each and every day.

So, I encourage you to thank a small business for what they do daily to make our community and this country who we are.

Our inaugural Trades Scholarship recipient is Xavier Ellis from Lee's Summit West High School (pictured, center).

Xavier is a member of the Peer Inclusive Environment Program where he helps his peers learn life skills. He has also volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club where he taught kids how to swim. He's also a varsity letter winner in soccer.

Chamber Young Professionals

Service Project

Our Chamber Young Professionals volunteered with the LSR-7 Build Zone Project to guide fifth graders through the process of building their very own birdhouses! This was a great way to encourage hands-on learning and help kids discover the excitement of engineering!

Chamber Before Hours Service Project

Our April Before Hours took place at Hillcrest Transitional Housing's Thrift Store in Lee's Summit. Volunteers helped sort through clothing, home goods and furniture to get the store prepared for its daily operations!

Goody Bags for

Whiteman Air Force Base

Dozens of our members donated branded items, gift cards and experiences to the Chamber's welcome bags initiative for the families stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base. These bags will help bring more business to Lee's Summit by encouraging families to shop local!

We celebrated the retirement our beloved Director of Financial Operations Cathy Young in April. We sent her off with a reception fit for a queen! Thanks to all who stopped by to show her support during this important moment in her life.

Entrepreneurship Kickoff Event

We fanned the flame of entrepreneurship in our community during our Entrepreneurship Kickoff Event April 18.

Thank you to all who attended. Stay tuned for future workshops!
