Butler funeral timeline

 

Wednesday, January 11, 1893 – General Butler died at his home in Washington, D.C. at 1:30 AM

 

Friday, January 13 – Butler’s remains arrive in Lowell by train. The body was taken to his residence on Andover Street

 

Sunday, January 15 – A funeral service for relatives and immediate friends was held at the house at 9:30 AM

 

Lying in state at Huntington Hall 11:00 to 5:00, and again on Monday morning 8:00 to 11:00. The Lowell Sun at the time estimated that 45,000 people paid their respects during these hours

 

Monday, January 16 – Funeral at St. Anne’s Church at 1:30

 

The funeral procession proceeded to The Hildreth Family Cemetery for the burial service

No. 9 Merrimack Street was in Simpson's Block on the corner of Merrimack and Bridge Streets.

So the the procession was proceeding in an easterly direction from St. Anne's Church toward the camera and is taking a left turn on Bridge Street to cross the bridge to the Hildreth Family Cemetery.

A January 16, 1893 Lowell Sun article is another example of the respect that Lowell had for General Butler.

It also is more evidence that the procession went down Bridge Street.
