Dr. Khushmit Kaur, current WCM EM Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellow, and Dr. Peter Steel, WCM EM Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and recognized thought leader on the impact of policy on delivery of emergency care, recently wrote an article highlighting the challenges posed by social determinants of health (SDoH) in the ED. Entitled “The Social EM Dilemma: The tension between a central EM mission and limited ED resources,” the article argues that an ED visit represents a high-yield opportunity to identify and initiate intervention for SDoH, which may potentially to improve health and quality of life for vulnerable populations, a core component of Emergency Medicine’s public health mission. Unfortunately, Drs. Kaur and Steel also suggest that it is currently unrealistic to perform these assessments in most EDs without additional resources and funding. Therefore, they argue that advocacy in collaboration with community and government partners is essential to secure additional resources, including through reimbursement mechanisms, to support this. |
