STEM Advance Program
The STEM Advance Project is funded by a grant from the Department of Education’s Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) STEM and Articulation Program. The project aims to increase the number of students who choose STEM majors and pursue careers in STEM.
Through this project, we will promote student success and deepen students’ understanding of what it means to be a scientist. Through the grant, we have been able to:
- Hire new faculty in various STEM disciplines
- Develop new courses that introduce students to STEM careers and prepare them for STEM classes
- Renovate our chemistry instrument room
- Upgrade our computer science classrooms
- Obtain new equipment such as spectrometers and data acquisition systems
- Hire an Academic Coach to help students with their time management and academic skills
- Hire a Resource Coordinator to help students access non-academic resources
The grant also allows us to hire STEM majors to serve other students and the university as:
- STEM ambassadors for our Office of Admissions
- Undergraduate laboratory instructional assistants
- Supplemental instruction leaders
In addition, the grant helps students to experience STEM by financially supporting summer activities such as internships and independent research projects.
