| Ellicott City, MD – July 2, 2024 – District 1 is excited to announce the introduction of new legislation aimed at creating an Office of the Inspector General in Howard County. This initiative represents a major step forward in our commitment to making local government more transparent, accountable, and efficient. The proposed Office of the Inspector General (OIG) will serve as an independent entity with the authority to investigate organizations funded by the County. Its main goal will be to uncover and address instances of waste, fraud, and abuse, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used wisely for the benefit of our community. "The Inspector General will have no agenda other than good government," said Liz Walsh, Howard County District 1 Councilmember and the sponsor of the OIG legislation. “This is for the people, now and in the future.” Inspired by successful models in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, the Howard County OIG will adopt best practices tailored to meet our community's specific needs. The Inspector General will be appointed by a citizen board to maintain impartiality and independence in its operations. This legislation represents a shared goal to enhance trust, accountability, and transparency in local government. District 1 looks forward to engaging with residents and stakeholders throughout the legislative process to ensure the success of this important initiative. A public hearing for this legislation will be held on Monday, July 15th at 7pm. We invite you to come and voice your support. Sign up to testify in support of CB 47 and CB 48.
