History of the National Pilates Certification Program

2005

The National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) was launched in 2005 by the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA). It was initially established as the PMA Pilates Certification Program with the objective of setting a universal measure of competency for comprehensively trained Pilates teachers from the different Pilates schools and lineages.

The credential awarded at the time was PMA Pilates Certified Teacher (PMA® - CPT), recognizing the comprehensively trained Pilates teacher who had met established professional standards, thus providing the public with third party verification of competency and safety.

The program had a separate Board of Directors and functioned within the PMA as an autonomous credentialing program. The “PMA” in the name of the program caused great confusion over the years.

2012

The program sought and received accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), placing it among other highly regarded programs in fitness, health, rehabilitation, and allied professions across the US. In the subsequent years following accreditation, the program remained an autonomous program within the PMA and continued to gain recognition and acceptance by the Pilates Community.

2019

The program rebranded itself as the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) to clarify the confusion between membership and certification and established a more independent identity, furthering the program’s autonomy. The NPCP developed a separate website; the credential changed to Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT), all marks and logos were changed to reflect the new brand and the program continued to grow in recognition and number of certified teachers.

2021

The program took the final step in establishing its complete autonomy by incorporating as a 501c (6), not for profit corporation in the State of Florida, completely independent from the parent organization.
