To Walk by Faith

The Amish have a frequent conversational saying, "For sure and for certain," when agreeing to a thing, and I am reminded of Hebrews 11:1:

"To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see." Good News Translation.

How sure and certain of Jesus' goodness are you in the troubling challenges of your life? What does it look like to walk by faith?

I have recently had the opportunity to practice walking by faith in a significant change of season. In His goodness, Jesus has shown me some very practical steps to walking in faith that I would like to share.

First, I suspect the journey of walking by faith is more important than the destination or outcome because God is more concerned about our character than our comfort. I have found that this process of walking in faith tests our heart. What needs healing? What do I really believe? What needs to be surrendered or corrected?

Along the journey, we get to choose our response to the challenges we face. Choosing joy over fear; faith over doubt; praise over worry puts us in alignment to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit as we seek direction.

The outcome won't look like you imagine, so surrender your expectations to His will.

As we hear direction in our mind, take every thought captive to Christ—did I interpret what I heard correctly? Don't add conclusions like, "that must mean..." Take all thoughts back to Jesus for confirmation or correction.

Learning to be still in the stress is key. Life goes on, deadlines loom, and still no solution, but the God who hears and cares is still in the equation. Faith is not resignation or trusting in the process; it is trusting and leaning on the God who can do the impossible.

Faith costs you your pride, your solutions, your plans, but in the end, it is "for sure and for certain" that the God of the impossible moves on our behalf as we surrender, listen, and obey step by step without having the whole picture. The joy of walking by faith is seeing the goodness of God in blessing us in ways we could have never known.

May the goodness of God be manifest in your challenges as you learn to walk by faith.
