New Study Reveals Hidden Dangers in Illicit Cannabis Vape Cartridges

RPC is excited to share our latest findings in our most recent study titled “Analysis of Illicit Cannabis Vape Cartridges and Other Products for Chemical Contaminants.

This comprehensive study builds on our previous research from September 2021 and sheds light on the ongoing risks associated with illicit cannabis products.

Some key findings from the study

  • Public Health and Safety: Our study reveals alarming levels of chemical contaminants in illicit cannabis vape cartridges, including a 93% positivity rate for pesticide contamination. This poses significant health risks to consumers.

  • Regulatory Insights: The findings underscore the importance of adhering to Health Canada’s Good Production Practices, which are not followed by illicit producers, thereby increasing the risk of harmful contaminants.

  • Consumer Awareness: With the rise in popularity of vape products, it is crucial for consumers to understand the potential dangers of illicit cannabis. Our study provides vital information to help Canadians make informed decisions.

  • Industry Impact: The report highlights the discrepancies in THC potency claims between illicit and legal products, emphasizing the need for stringent testing and regulation to ensure consumer safety.

Andrien Rackov, the lead author of the study and the Director of Research and Controlled Substances here at RPC, says one of the goals with this kind of research is to provide a clearer picture of what is in products on the illicit market across Canada.

You really don’t know what you’re getting and these products are not being screened for contaminants.”

Andrien Rackov, Ph.D, Director of Research & Controlled Substances - RPC
