City Hall, NY -During the last City Council Stated meeting of the year, Council Member Althea Stevens and Chair of the Youth Service committee passed legislation that was part of a historical legislative package aimed at increasing police transparency city-wide. The collaborative effort by City Council Members and Public Advocate Jumaane Wiliams, is a significant step towards addressing the lack of accountability and transparency that has disproportionately impacted black and brown communities in initiatives designed to serve the public.

Int.638-A, sponsored by Council Member Althea Stevens, stands out as a pivotal component of this historical legislative initiative. The legislation mandates an annual report on donations exceeding $1 million to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

This piece of legislation underscores Council Member Stevens' unwavering commitment to transparency , shedding light on the financial support the NYPD receives and the ensuing impact on community policing initiatives.

Council Member Althea Stevens emphasizes,This piece of legislation is not only about oversight but about ensuring that resources allocated to the NYPD directly benefit the programs and projects aimed at strengthening our neighborhoods, especially in our black and brown communities. We must emphasize transparency and accountability from the NYPD, by empowering our community members with the knowledge of the financial support shaping our city’s law enforcement.”.

The fight for transparency was no easy road, as this piece of legislation was introduced by the Bronx borough president Vanessa L. Gibson, during her time as a City Council Member. “Transparency must be at the forefront of everything we do as public servants and that includes those sworn to serve and protect us,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “I want to thank Council Member Stevens and the New York City Council for pushing this important legislation forward. Intro 638 is crucial to ensuring the public is fully aware of the large donations made to the NYPD and that there is adequate oversight and accountability.”
