More information on the Foothill Abortion vaccine

If you read our June Newsletter, you may have seen the article titled “What is Foothill Abortion and How to Manage it?”. I decided to do a follow-up about the vaccine and reached out to the company who is producing the vaccine to ask for more information. They told me that it is still pretty much the same information that you may have read in the California Cattleman’s November 2020 issue.

However, you might want to listen to the following podcast found on the California Cattlemen’s Association website where you can learn more about the different steps that they had to go through to create the Foothill Abortion vaccine and everything you need to know to administer it to your herd.

As a reminder, for this vaccine, timing is important! You need to give them a call early, even if you do not know your exact numbers yet, so that they can the vaccine to your specified veterinarian in enough time to fit your schedule. Also, cattle MUST be open when the vaccine is administered and must not be bred for AT LEAST 60 days after vaccination or abortion is likely to occur due to the live nature of the vaccine.

Foothill Abortion (Epizootic Bovine Abortion)

Foothill abortion, or epizootic bovine abortion, is a tick-borne disease in cattle. It is a problem for beef producers in California, Nevada and Oregon.

Sorting through Foothill Abortion and the commercially available vaccine for it

As it turns out 20 minutes was not enough time to talk through Foothill Abortion, an issue that has been one of CCA's top research priorities for decades.
