The Filter First Act requires Michigan schools and childcare centers to install certified lead-reducing filters on all consumptive water fixtures—not just drinking fountains, but also kitchen sinks, steamers, ice machines, and more.

🗓️ January 24, 2025: Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP) due

🗓️ June 2026: All filters must be installed and certified

If water from a fixture could be consumed or used in food prep and cooking, it needs a certified filter.

This includes, but is not limited too:

Drinking Fountains Bottle Fillers Kitchen Sinks Steamers Ice Machines Water Dispensers

Filters must meet NSF/ANSI 42 & 53 standards and be approved by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
