Donna Keim,

TTC Board of Directors President

Greetings while surviving a HOT Summer!

I know that our club members have been getting up early and playing tennis early because it has been SO HOT! We have also played at the high schools while Timberhill has hosted tournaments. Love that we can help all ages get tournament experience. It really is fun and you meet so many more players at your level. During the summer, have you and your doubles partner asked another doubles team from Timberhill that is a level above you, if you can play a match (or the same with singles)? Helps your skill level improve so much faster! Take a lesson with our pros and keep asking to be PUSHED!

Speaking of PUSH, I know that we have a 55+ Mixed Doubles Team, at 7.0 level going to Sectionals October 1-3! They would like to be PUSHED to represent Timberhill the best they can be! Reach out and invite those players to play against you!  Team includes: Captain Melissa Pohl, Donna Jepsen-Minyard, Bill Bogley, Peter Hewitt, Donna Keim, Ken Lefton, Eric Leong, Christine Mueller, and Craig Massie.

As we get into Fall, please get on a USTA team (18+ Mixed and 55+ are signing up now), or start one and ask for players! It is a wonderful experience and your game improves so much. Happy Swinging!

If it's hot and cold in the same day, it must be summer in Oregon! I hope everyone is hanging in there with the warm temperatures--by the time you read this, the worst of the heat wave should be over and things should be getting back to where we like them in August. Speaking of heat, it has been interesting to see how the buildings are responding to the heat with the new insulation in effect! In courts 4-6, we've been able to get in early most days and open the garage door and kick the east fans on to pull in cool air in the morning. By 11 or 12 most days, the air that is being pulled in becomes warmer, so we close things up and shut the fans down to trap the cool air in until things cool down again at night. What we've seen is when people want to get air flow and open the garage doors/turn fans on in the heat of the afternoon, it pulls lots of hot air in and increases the temperature of the building. In courts 1-3, without ventilation, things feel ok (on the really hot days) until 2 or 3, and then it does start to warm up in there. As high temps start to get back to the low to mid 80s, that should moderate a bit. We definitely have a bit more control of things in 4-6, though it feels like both buildings have improved how they react to summer heat.

Also, where are those benches we raised money for? Well, as of this writing (July 28) they are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. The manufacturing process was delayed, but they finally got done. Once delivered, we'll have to assemble and measure/manufacture name plates for those philanthropic members that donated for them, and then we'll have them on the courts. Definitely should see them in action sometime in August.

We hosted a great tournament in July, a USTA Level 4 event for girls. This gives more heavily weighted ranking points for national standings, and we were able to draw girls from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Colorado, Arizona, and Montana. It was a great revenue event for the club, and it was a tremendous opportunity to bring a high level of junior tennis to the club. Thanks to the membership for sharing court time periodically with events like this for the juniors.

On a sad note, we'll be saying farewell to Henry Trinh this month, as he moves out of town to start searching for work in his field of study at OSU (he graduated this spring). Henry has been a fixture in the pro shop, earning his Master Racquet Technician designation and establishing himself as a valuable resource for string and frame consultations, and his high quality string jobs. We'll certainly miss him around here, but wish him well as he embarks on his next chapter. In his absence, Tessa, Michael and I will step in and handle the stringing duties, so keep those racquets coming!

Lastly, thank you for your continued patience with our new court reservation system. While functional in a similar way to our old reservation system, there are differences that have garnered mixed reviews and also a couple of technical issues that should get resolved soon. I've heard from a bunch of you, and I've taken that feedback to the software developers to improve the product for us moving forward. Many of the changes can be made, but it takes a bit of time to get those things changed, tested, and released, so thanks for your patience as this process plays out. It's a ongoing process, so if there is an issue in the system that you would like to see resolved, let me know and I'll see if there is an option to improve it.
