Essential Jobs, Essential Care™ New Jersey Coalition

New Jersey Advocates for Aging Well and PHI are pleased to invite you to join the Essential Jobs, Essential Care™ New Jersey Coalition.

NJAAW and PHI have partnered to build on the progress many NJ organizations have made in supporting the direct care workforce. As the COVID-19 pandemic has made clear, direct care workers provide critical support to older adults and people with disabilities across the state. Inadequate compensation, limited training and advancement opportunities, and other challenges are pushing direct care workers away from this sector, making it more difficult for providers to meet current and growing demand.

The Essential Jobs, Essential Care initiative brings stakeholders together to transform direct care jobs in order to improve services and supports for older adults and people with disabilities in New Jersey. Our first convening on May 23rd & 24th brought together 50+ stakeholders, including academics, state agencies, service providers and non profits. We also heard directly from people who work in home care, nursing homes, community living settings and other roles who inspired us with their stories, compassion and dedication to their patients and their work. Throughout this two-day convening, participants gained an enhanced understanding of this initiative, identified opportunities for engagement, and participated in structured conversations to determine policy and advocacy priorities to improve direct care jobs across the state.

We are moving ahead with the next phase of this initiative, and will be forming committees to work on a road map towards a bigger, stronger and supported workforce that will meet the needs of all NJ residents. We will look at opportunities in training, increasing wages and benefits, and data collection, among other areas.
