Faith-sharing with the Friars

Every Tuesday morning, the friars gather for an extended period of prayer and fraternal reflection on the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday. The format they use and the questions that guide their discussion will now be shared each week with parishioners for personal meditation and household conversation.

The Faith Sharing Reflection for the current week will be shown in its entirety on this page, and all previous week's reflections will be available to download below.

FAITH SHARING - The Nativity of the Lord

Call to Prayer

O God, come to our assistance; O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

Psalmody (Psalm 24:1-6)

Antiphon: “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising, and have come to do him homage.”

The Lord’s are the earth and its fullness,

the world and all its peoples.

It is God who set it on the seas,

who made it firm on the waters.

Who shall climb the mountain of the LORD?

Who shall stand in God’s holy place?

Those with clean hands and pure heart,

who desire not worthless things,

(who have not sworn so as to deceive their neighbor.)

They shall receive blessings from the LORD

and reward from the God who saves them.

Such are the ones who seek him,

seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Glory to the Father,

And to the Son,

And to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.

Psalmody (Psalm 72)

Antiphon: The wise men prostrated themselves and did him homage.

O God, give your judgement to the king,

to a king’s son your justice,

that he may judge your people in justice

and your poor in right judgment.

May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice.

May he defend the poor of the people

and save the children of the needy

and crush the oppressor.

He shall endure like the sun and the moon

from age to age.

He shall descend like rain on the meadow,

like raindrops on the earth.

In his days justice shall flourish

and peace till the moon fails.

He shall rule from sea to sea,

from the Great River to earth’s bounds.

Before him his enemies shall fall,

his foes lick the dust.

The kings of Tarshish and the seacoasts

shall pay him tribute.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,

who alone works wonders,

The kings of Sheba and Seba

shall bring him gifts.

Before him all rulers shall fall prostrate,

all nations shall serve him.

For he shall save the poor when they cry

and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak

and save the lives of the poor.

From oppression he will rescue their lives,

to him their blood is dear.

Long may he live;

may the gold of Sheba be given him.

May corn be abundant in the land

to the peaks of the mountains.

May its fruit rustle like Lebanon;

may people flourish in the cities

like grass on the earth.

May his name be blessed for ever

and endure like the sun.

Every tribe shall be blessed in him,

all nations bless his name.

ever blessed God’s glorious name.

Let his glory fill the earth. Amen. Amen.

Reading: Matthew 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east

arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and

have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem

with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the

Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the

prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since

from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi

secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and

said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go

and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had

seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They

were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.

They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts

of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they

departed for their country by another way.

Faith sharing

Was there a word, phrase or image in the psalms or the gospel passage that particularly struck you? If so, what might the Spirit be trying to say to you?

The dictionary defines an epiphany as “an appearance or manifestation of a god or other supernatural being.” What epiphanies have you had lately? How has God manifested God’s self to you in people, events, nature, public worship and private prayer?

The magi “search[ed] diligently for the child.” How is your search for God going?

What gift or gifts are you offering to the Newborn King this year?

Our Father & Concluding Prayer

O God, who revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star,

grant in your mercy that we, who seek you by the light of faith,

may one day see you face to face, and behold the beauty of your sublime glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever. Amen.
