Acequia Irrigation for Orchards

Arguello Orchard in Valdez (437 State Rd. 230, Valdez, NM 87580)


View a demonstration on efficient water use for orchards using acequias at a traditionally terraced orchard in Valdez (437 State Rd. 230). Local farmer Carlos Arguello and NMSU Taos County Cooperative Extension Service & 4-H Program agent Will Jaremko-Wright will teach best practices for orchard irrigation, including the use of earthworks, land topography, and optimal perennial groundcover.


Participants can pay $5 for all-you-can-pick cherries at the orchard after the demonstration!

Pest & Disease Management for Fruit Trees

Wednesday, July 24 | 5:30-7:30 PM

Juan I. Gonzales Agricultural Center (202 Chamisa Rd, Taos, NM 87571)


This hands-on Integrated Pest Management workshop will teach you best practices for managing fire blight, root rot, fungal infections, and bacterial infections, as well as traps for monitoring and controlling apple maggot, coddling moth, and peach twig borer. We'll also discuss management of rodents, deer and birds—implications for fencing, exclosure, electric fencing, and netting. Participants will receive past management traps and learn how to implement them.



We will meet at the Agricultural Center, then caravan to a nearby site.

Market Opportunities for Fruit Growers

Learn how to effectively identify market opportunities to sell your fruit crops, including farmers' markets, food outlets, CSAs, and more. Attendees will discover best practices for labeling, such as using terms like 'organic' versus 'locally grown,' gain insight on preparing fruit crops for market, and find out how the Taos County Economic Development Corporation can assist in the process.

Soil Health Principles in Orchard Systems

Come learn how to implement the Soil Health Principles in orchards for regenerative fruit production! Improve soil health and orchard health by armoring the soil, integrating animals, maintaining a living root, increasing biodiversity, and minimizing soil disturbance!

Summer Pruning Workshop

Join local certified arborist Paul Bryan Jones and NMSU Taos County Cooperative Extension Service & 4-H Program agent Will Jaremko-Wright to learn about the value of summer pruning. In this hands-on workshop at the orchard at the Taos Youth & Family Center, participants will learn pruning techniques for old heirloom overgrown trees and how to bring trees back to a manageable size for production and easier harvest.
