Lila Russell

Independent Communications Contractor

Lila joined NAMI New York State in January 2026 as a Communications and Public Relations contractor, bringing experience in nonprofit advocacy, digital storytelling, and community-centered communications. Her work at NAMI NYS has ranged from overhauling the organization’s mental illness educational brochures to helping translate advocacy, policy, and mental health information into resources that feel clear, approachable, and meaningful for communities across New York State.

Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, Lila graduated from North Carolina State University in May 2024. Since then, she has worked with a variety of nonprofit and grassroots organizations across North Carolina focused on voter engagement, sustainable development, and affordable housing advocacy. Through this work, she has developed a passion for advocacy-driven communications and enjoys helping turn complicated policy conversations into information that communities can actually connect with, understand, and use.

Working with NAMI New York State has been a defining chapter in Lila’s professional career. Witnessing firsthand the organization’s impact on individuals, families, and communities across New York State has further strengthened her commitment to mission-driven communications, public advocacy, and work that creates meaningful, tangible change.

Following the completion of her communications contract, Lila chose to continue working with NAMI New York State as a contractor supporting the organization’s Schizophrenia Comprehensive Care Initiative, where she collaborates with the program manager and strategic content partners to help expand outreach efforts, strengthen public engagement, and support the initiative’s broader communications and promotional strategy.
