Welcome to Our HeartMind Adventure!

Our HeartMind Adventure activities give you a way to understand more about the value of "Our 5Cs"—consciousness, compassion, confidence, courage, and community. This month, we're focusing on community. Seven key ways we can strengthen the strings of our community are by acknowledging one another, having a significant someone for support and to vent with, using touch or supportive feedback, assuming positive intent, acting with gratitude, giving ourselves permission to have an “off” day, and being sure to celebrate success and sharing joy.

Step One: Observe

Take a moment to think about your school community. On a piece of paper, make a journal entry—handwritten will make you feel more connected—listing the 7 ground rules for building community that our featured writer, Dr. Patschke, shared from Mason et al. (2021). Look at them, and for the next week, observe your own school community. Keep in mind the actions you see or experience that relate to the rules. Also keep in mind where there are opportunities for more to occur.

At the end of the week, with a nice beverage, a deep breath, and a cozy peaceful moment, return to your journal to write.

Step Two: Reflect

At the end of the week, return to your journal entry and list some of the actions you saw and experienced occurring in your school community.

What did you notice?

Were there opportunities that were missed?

Which of the rules does your school community already explicitly support?

Which could be better supported?

Consider how relevant these rules could be to your school community. How might you bring them up for everyone to align on?

Step Three: Deepen Your Understanding

As you start to understand courage in varied contexts, consider how individuals, particularly youth, differ and relate in how they show courage.

Do you think courage comes naturally or is it something that is worked at? When is it appropriate or inappropriate to be courageous? How can you support students in understanding and acting courageously in a way that is personal to them in their lives?

What are your takeaways from this step on our HeartMind Adventure?

Journal: As you observe and reflect, take time periodically to write a few notes, perhaps noting some positive and negative events or circumstances. Consider students in your class or school. How do the events you have described impact them?

Discuss your thoughts and feelings as you explore our HeartMind Adventure this month.
