Even before COVID-19, nearly 4.5 million Canadians experienced food insecurity every day. In the first two months of the pandemic, that number increased by 39%, affecting 1 in 7 people. (stats Canada)

With the onset of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, all Soup Sister soup-making events have been cancelled since March 2020.

We knew at our core that the soup must go on!

We were not deterred from fulfilling our mandate to provide a 'hug in a bowl ' to communities in need across Canada.

National Soup It Forward Day on March 3, encourages people across Canada and the US to make and deliver love and kindness by the bowlful!

Perhaps you know someone who has been ill or down on their luck, or someone who could just use a little warmth and kindness in their lives.

Whatever the situation, we know homemade soup can go a long way!

Our mandate is to impact food inequity and food insecurity in support of frontline health workers, domestic violence emergency shelters, marginalized seniors, transitional housing for homeless, First Nations, youth in crisis, centres for drug addiction and mental health, and Food Banks.

The majority of young people at The Doorway are food insecure.

Soup Sisters freezer full of soup gives our young people the security of knowing there is always a big, hearty, healthy meal for them.

They are very grateful for the food hampers they receive from other services, but food hampers often lack nutrients and can’t meet food preferences and dietary needs. Soup Sisters ensures their soups are loaded with vegetables and protein. It fills their hearts and their bellies.

When you’re afraid and alone, confused and overwhelmed, sometimes what you need most is something simple, a small kindness, an uncomplicated gift, a wordless sign that somebody, somewhere, has you in their thoughts.

Each time a shelter resident sits down to a hot bowl of homemade soup, they receive a message of encouragement, compassion, and reassurance that renews their hope and determination when they desperately need support.
