My Story

My mother died of brain cancer before her fiftieth birthday. My grandmothers lived into their eighties and nineties, but diabetes and dementia diminished their quality of life. I still carry that grief, alongside questions about how greater knowledge of food and lifestyle might have supported their health.

In my family, food was love, celebration, comfort, and connection. I grew up knowing its power to give life. Over time, I also came to understand how eating patterns and lifestyle can contribute to diseases that shorten lives and diminish the years we have. That understanding became personal when menopause brought concerns about prediabetes and obesity. Since thirteen, I had endured migraines that could last up to six days, causing pain so intense that I'd faint, leaving me in dark rooms, and isolated from the people I loved. Returning to veganism (which I'd learned growing up in the Seventh-day Adventist tradition in Southern California) in my 40's brought some relief from those horrible migraines. However, I wavered throughout the years, opting for animal-based foods, high fat, and copious amounts of sugar. In my early 50's menopause forced me to face my food choices and my relationship with food changed again: pleasure still mattered, but so did protecting my health.

Today, I veganize the foods that hold my family’s stories while choosing nourishment that supports my future. Grief has made these choices deeply personal. I cannot change the losses of my loved ones, but I can honor them by caring for the body I have. I've also set a course to support others facing similar losses and personal health choices. My goal is to reduce the number of loss stories we have to tell and to provide tools and education to improve health, transform lives of individuals and families, and to foster vibrant relationships with food, our loved ones, and with ourselves.

Thanks for watching this series with me.
