A Letter From the President

In the wonderful state of Missouri, it may not feel like spring, but guess what — spring is officially here!

Spring brings many great events to the Chamber, one being our Annual Golf Classic on May 8.

One thing's for certain — when it comes to the 150+ events hosted throughout the year including the tournament — without the support of our volunteers, we couldn't offer as many exciting opportunities to our members.

April is recognized as National Volunteer Month. It's an excellent opportunity for organizations like the Lee’s Summit Chamber to honor the invaluable contributions of volunteers within their local communities.

The Chamber often relies on volunteers for a variety of essential tasks, from organizing events and supporting small businesses to advocating for local economic growth. By celebrating volunteers, the Chamber not only expresses our gratitude but also encourages others to get involved and make a positive impact. It serves as a reminder that volunteerism is a vital force that drives both community success and the wellbeing of local businesses.

During the month of April, the Chamber will highlight our volunteers through our marketing efforts via social media and email. From the Chamber staff to our board of directors, I can’t thank you, our volunteers, enough for what you do and mean to our organization.

I also want to remind you that May 4-10 is National Small Business Week. Small Business Week, created to celebrate the vital role small businesses play in driving local economies, is when we recognize the hard work, creativity, and resilience of entrepreneurs and small business owners.

That week is dedicated to shining a spotlight on the critical contributions that small businesses make to innovation, job creation, and community development. Across the nation, events and initiatives will be held to provide support, resources, and networking opportunities for small business owners to grow and succeed.

During that week, the Lee’s Summit Chamber will put a spotlight on our own small but mighty business community — what I like to say is the, “backbone of our economy” — and the contributions they have made and continue to make, to our community, our state, our nation and the world.

Bring on the sunshine, the flowers, the sweet smell of business success — and as my kids like to remind me, the Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies!

Cheers to a successful spring!

March Highlights

Recess For Success

Our latest Recess For Success March 4 with guest speaker Jane Monroe of Embrace The Grape Beverage Catering focused on Strategic partnerships — the collaborative relationships formed between individuals or organizations with aligned goals and mutual benefits.

Jane shared why these partnerships are crucial in both personal and professional contexts, as they offer opportunities for growth, knowledge sharing, and increased influence.

To cultivate them effectively, she said it’s essential to approach these relationships with a mindset of trust and transparency. Personally, this can be achieved by actively listening, offering value without expecting immediate returns, and showing genuine interest in others’ success.

Professionally, strategic partnerships thrive on clear communication, shared objectives, and leveraging complementary strengths.

LSR-7 School Board Candidate Forum

The Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce was proud to host the 2025 LSR-7 School Board Candidate Forum Wednesday, March 12 at the Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

The forum will consist of candidates who have filed to run for two open positions on the LSR-7 School Board. The election will take place April 8, 2025.

Chamber members, citizens of Lee's Summit and those within the LSR-7 School District were encouraged to attend this free event to hear directly from candidates and learn where they stand on a number of positions impacting the district.

To ensure the community was fully engaged in this forum, the event was live-streamed on the Chamber's Facebook account as well as posted on the Chamber’s website and YouTube channel following the event.

During the forum, we allowed time for questions from the public.

Leadership Lee's Summit Hard Hat Tour of Green Street Market Project

Our Leadership Lee's Summit Class of 2025 had a full session Tuesday, March 11 dedicated to diving into several different areas of the City and its government.

The day included a few special moments — like playing with puppies while learning more about LS Animal Control, an informative session on Water Utilities and a tour of Resource Recovery Park and Fire Station #3.

Other stops included John Knox Village and the Public Works Department.

Later in the day, the group heard from Councilmember Hillary Shields and Assistant City Manager Donna Lake at City Hall. They also learned how development works with Aimee Nassif, Interim Director of Development.

The day concluded with a hard hat tour of the exciting Green Street Market project with Planning Manager Shannon McGuire and McCownGordon Construction!

Thanks to John Knox Village for the delicious breakfast and lunch!

And a huge thank you to all our incredible speakers for helping these leaders grow and further develop their knowledge of Lee's Summit!

Chamber Young Professionals Service Project at One Good Meal

Our Chamber Young Professionals spent their morning March 19 prepping and packaging fresh, hot meals with One Good Meal, a nonprofit dedicated to delivering care, compassion and connection to local seniors and those who are home-bound, regardless of income, in Lee's Summit.

We had a blast making new connections while learning more about the mission and history of One Good Meal.

Special thanks to Director Roberta McArthur for guiding us through the morning!

Business & Bagels

While the generations we are born into do not define us, they do provide clues to help us work together more efficiently.

As the workforce continues to change, it’s possible to create engagement, loyalty and high productivity!

We learned this and so much more today during our Cross Generational Communication Business and Bagels workshop March 20 with guest speakers Liesl Hays and Melissa O’Daniel, owners of Aligned Talent Consulting.

Special thanks to our event sponsor, University of Central Missouri - Lee’s Summit and our venue host, Bridge Space, for making this event possible.

And of course, special shoutout to OverBoard Coffee for the delicious bagels!

100 People Who Care

The Chamber proudly co-sponsored the 100 People Who Care event with the Lee's Summit R-7 School District to raise awareness for the great work nonprofits are doing in our community.

Thank you to all who attended and generously donated to the nonprofit recipient — Answering the Call — a Chamber member dedicated to supporting first responders during crises due to medical diagnoses, and duty/or non-duty related injuries.

Please join us in congratulating them!

Excellence in Business Awards Luncheon

Chamber After Hours Networking

It was the perfect weather March 13 for a ribbon cutting/After Hours Networking Event at The Fairways Apartment Homes!

The apartment complex recently made exciting improvements including interior upgrades to units by adding stainless steel appliances, new light fixtures, quartz countertops and flooring.

Exterior improvements include the replacement and repair of staircases around the property, improved landscaping, concrete repairs, parking lot renovations and a brand new pool deck!

John Stephenson, President and Owner of CRES Management, LLC, said his company has already invested over $2 million dollars in the property since purchasing it in June of 2024.

They plan to continue to invest in the property with an estimated total of about $3.5 million dollars in improvements. Their ultimate goal is to enhance resident experience and positively contribute to the community of Lee's Summit.

After the ceremony, Chamber members enjoyed refreshments, raffle prizes and tours of units provided by The Fairways staff.

Business Field Trip

A huge thank you to Assistant Chief Jim Eden, Assistant Chief Wes Blanscet, Captain Justin Burch, and the entire crew at Lee’s Summit Fire Department - Station 7 for an incredibly educational, eye-opening, and engaging experience during our Business Field Trip March 26!

We had the opportunity to learn just how much goes into being an all-hazards department, covering:

- Fire Prevention & Life Safety

- Fire Investigation & Public Education

- Emergency Communication & Preparedness

- Fire Suppression & Emergency Medical Services

- Technical Rescue & Hazardous Materials Mitigation

Total responses in 2024: 12,758 – a true testament to their dedication and readiness.

LSFD’s mission is to serve with PRIDE – Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Duty, and Excellence – and that was evident in everything we saw!

Some highlights from our visit:

- Touring the fire and dry towers, where firefighters train for real-life emergencies, including navigating tight, low-visibility spaces.

- Witnessing a live training scenario, where the crew demonstrated how they breach doors, set up hoses, and maneuver through a burning building to extinguish flames.

- Getting an up-close look at their cutting-edge equipment and fire trucks, designed to keep their team at the top of their game.

This experience gave us even more appreciation for the hard work, skill, and dedication of our local firefighters and EMS responders.

We are grateful to know that when seconds count, LSFD is ready, highly trained, and equipped to answer the call.

Risk Takers: Building Your A Team

We learned how to best tackle the challenges of hiring, retaining and optimizing our workforce March 27 during our Risk Takers Building Your A Team event at Bridge Space.

Our expert panelists — Michael VanBuskirk of Newmark Zimmer, Nancy McCullough of e2E and Samuel Noel of Treasure Advertising — provided unparalleled advice to attendees on how to build and maintain a winning team to drive their businesses forward.

Lauren Sobaski of Fisher Phillips guided the panel as moderator.

Special thanks to SERVPRO of Lee's Summit for sponsoring the event, Embrace the Grape Beverage Catering for the great selection of beverages and Chef Aristo's Curbside, Catering & Eatery for the delicious appetizers.

We hope you made some great "calculated collisions."

We look forward to seeing you at the next event — our Risk Takers Empowerment Exchange July 24!

Chamber members were encouraged to invite prospective new members to this fun Expo-style networking event.

Guests had the opportunity to meet with Staff and LS Chamber Members to learn about the benefits of belonging to the Lee's Summit Chamber AND enter a drawing!
