Become a volunteer English tutor!

Adult English Language Learners in our community are waiting to be matched with a volunteer tutor like you.

No experience required! All training is provided.

Who can become a tutor?

Learn more about our simple requirements below!

Tutors should be 18 years of age or older.

No teaching or tutoring experience is required.

Tutors should have a working knowledge of the English language.

English does not need to be your first language.

Tutors should be able to meet with their learner at least 4 hours each month.

We recommend one hour per week. Tutors and learners meet at a time and location convenient for both, such as in-person (public location like a library), online, or hybrid.

How does the program work?

Imagine not being able to read this sentence, open a bank account, or find the right words to discuss an urgent problem with your doctor or your child’s teacher. Our adult learners struggle daily in these types of situations. We help adults improve their English so they may overcome challenges like these.

We match trained volunteer literacy tutors with adult learners in one-on-one or small group settings. Tutors help them learn to read, write, speak and understand English better so that they may achieve their personal and professional goals. All tutoring is provided free of charge to learners.

"I love helping people and making their life easier because their English is improving."

- Shirley (Current Tutor)

What is the training like?

We proudly partner with Literacy Works to provide our free tutor training.

Training Overview

The "Tutor Essentials" 12-hour tutor training program prepares new volunteers to become adult literacy tutors.

If you are a retired teacher or hold a valid Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) certificate, you can receive up to 9 hours of training credit.

How it Works

Training includes both self-paced coursework (videos) and a live training (via Zoom) Here's the breakdown:

  • Video course: 9 hours
  • Live Review: 3 hours

Once you complete your training, we will match you with a learner.

"My tutor encouraged me to go to college and that was my first time in college. Thank you to all the tutors who use their time to help change other people's lives."

- Gerardo (Past Learner)
