Join us to enhance wildlife habitat in Sabercat Historical Park. This is a great opportunity to have a positive impact on the environment and to earn community service hours.

Location:

Sabercat Historical Park, old fence along Sabercat Creek Trail, west of the trail from the Quema Drive Entrance and east of site 3.


There are two ways to get to this site:


From the Quema Drive Entrance:


Park at Quema Dr., (Walking path from Quema Dr. entrance to meeting place: ~4-6 minute walk) Walk down the trail and turn right onto Sabercat Creek Trail, then walk west, until you just pass the old cattle gate that always stands open, with the "Riparian Restoration" Sign showing a bobcat, nearby. If you see the "Western Camel Restoration Site" Sign, you've gone too far.

From the Via Orinda Entrance:


Park at the Via Orinda and Castillejo Way Entrance, (Walking Path from Via Orinda entrance to meeting place: ~5 minute walk) Walk down the trail and turn left (walk east), past the "Gathering and Cooking Acorns" Interpretive Sign, and the Western Camel Restoration Site Sign, to the old fence and cattle gate that stands open, with the "Riparian Restoration" Sign showing a bobcat, nearby.

If taking transit, see this map with bus stops nearby Sabercat Historical Park entrances. Then follow directions as above, from the entrance you use.

Restrooms:

Please use a restroom before you arrive. There is a restroom with a pit toilet (but no running water or disinfectant) at the Via Orinda and Castillejo Way Entrance. It is about a 12-15 minute walk or a 3 minute drive from the Quema Drive Entrance. A public restroom with running water is located at Old Mission Park, a 3 minute drive away on Ibero Way off of Pine St.

Need To Cancel?

If you are enrolled and need to cancel, please submit your request for a withdrawal (choose withdrawal/refund request). This allows us to offer the available space to the next volunteer on the waitlist.

Who:

This volunteer event is for all ages. Volunteers under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Please ensure that you have registered the adult who will be accompanying the child, as well as the child.


If the child is a member of a group that has separate liability insurance coverage and policies that allow a particular adult leader accompanying the group to take responsibility for the children of this age (e.g., scoutmasters for Boy Scouts of America or Girl Scouts of America), then a ratio of at least one adult leader to 6 children under the age of 12 years is required.

Volunteer Tasks may include:

  • Watering native plants
  • Removing invasive plants
  • Refreshing plant basins
  • Creating, repairing, expanding, or removing browse protection cages
  • Planting or maintaining native plants
  • Removing litter
  • Removing fire ladder from the site
  • Sheet mulching

Bring:

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots   
  • Outdoor work clothes, long pants, socks, and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • A reusable water bottle
  • For wet conditions: waterproof boots, raincoat / poncho, rain pants
  • Gloves and tools will be provided. If you bring your own, please label them.
  • face covering such as a disposable or reusable mask (we have some disposable masks on hand) - optional for those who are fully vaccinated, but encouraged when in close proximity to other participants



COVID-19 Safety:

  • While Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted in many locations around the state, the health and safety of our volunteers remain our top priority. Please do not attend the cleanup if you have recently tested positive for Covid-19 or are experiencing any symptoms of Covid.

Rain/ Poor Air Quality Plans: 

If rain is predicted bring rain gear. You will get an email the morning of the event if it is cancelled. Only thunder, lightning, heavy rain, or unhealthy air quality cancel the event.
