Blood Clot Survivors in the Olympics: The Results (So Far)

Bruna Alexandre (Brazil, table tennis)

The Brazilian table tennis team was defeated by South Korea on August 5. Bruna Alexandre is also competing in the Paralympics starting August 29. She sustained a blood clot when she was an infant, which resulted in her losing her right arm.

Ryan Crouser (US, shot put)

Ryan Crouser made Olympics history on August 3 when he won a record three straight gold medals. In 2023, he won the World Championships despite having two DVTs in his left leg.

Jacob Dawson (England, rowing)

Jacob Dawson won a gold medal on August 3 as part of the Great Britain eight rowing team. He was forced to take time away from his team in 2022 when he suffered a PE, believed to be connected to Covid.

Kristin Faulkner (US, cycling)

On August 4, Kristin Faulkner became the first American to win gold in women's road racing in 40 years. Last year, she experienced a PE and fractured knee after being hit by a car while cycling in California.

Nelly Korda (US, golf)

The first round of the women's golf tournament begins August 7. Nelly Korda is the favorite to become the first back-to-back gold medal winner in the sport's history. She suffered a blood clot in her arm in 2022.

Tatyana McFadden (US, wheelchair track and field)

Known as the world’s fastest female wheelchair racer of all time, Tatyana McFadden suffered DVTs in her leg in 2017. She competes in the Paralympics starting August 29.

Courtney Ryan (US, wheelchair basketball)

A college soccer star, Ryan suffered a spinal cord injury caused by a blood clot in 2010. After recovering, she took up wheelchair basketball. She competes in the Paralympics starting August 29.

Steffen Peters (US, equestrian)

The US was knocked out of the qualifying dressage competition on July 31 following Steffen Peters' ride. He was hospitalized for a PE and DVT in January of this year after several international flights.

Madeleine Wanamaker (US, rowing)

The US women's eights rowing team finished fifth in the finals on August 3. Madeleine Wanamaker experienced a blood clot in her arm and thoracic outlet syndrome in 2023.
