ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING The ROSA Advisory Council convenes quarterly to receive and share information related to offshore wind research and monitoring, along with updates on current and future construction projects. At the March meeting, the Vineyard Wind team shared lessons learned so far as construction continues on Vineyard Vine 1. Scientists also discussed changes to bottom trawl surveys, and the Acoustic Telemetry Committee reported on its first meeting.
Vineyard Wind 1 The Vineyard Wind team shared lessons the company has learned during its construction of the first offshore wind development in the U.S. These lessons and insights include: 1. To date, some fishing vessels and surveys have been able to operate safely around wind towers. 2. Fishing vessels are uniquely positioned to support construction activities safely around towers and during construction and can support construction activities, such as preventing vessels from transiting through active construction areas. Training would be required and would be paid for by the OSW developer. 3. More work remains to align survey methods and protocols with other developers, the fishing industry, and researchers to include the development of data sharing agreements and platforms. The Advisory Council has tasked ROSA with developing the agreements and platform.
Adjustments to Trawl Surveys Recommended Scientists and fishing industry representatives are recommending adjustments to bottom trawl surveys. The recommendations include adding a restrictor rope between the trawl doors to prevent the net from overspreading, limiting unwanted variation in the areas swept during wind farm monitoring.
Acoustic Telemetry Committee Convened The Acoustic Telemetry Committee was convened and held its first meeting focusing on updating ROSA's Monitoring Guidance for acoustic telemetry. ROSA’s Research Director Mike Pol is leading the effort. |
