Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami is proud to collaborate with the Black Hospitality Initiative to provide scholarships to students. This partnership supports our shared commitment to empowering the next generation by ensuring equitable access to education and career opportunities. The Black Hospitality Initiative, based in Miami, Florida, is dedicated to increasing the workforce participation of African Americans and Blacks of African descent in the Greater Miami visitor industry. Through scholarship awards, talent development, and job connection programs, we are working together to help students achieve their full potential and contribute to the vibrant hospitality sector in our community.

Before you Begin

To complete this application you will need to have the following required documents ready to download:

  • Income Eligibility: Provide the latest tax return of the individual who claims the applicant, or submit a letter from DCF listing the applicant as eligible for Medicaid or Food Stamps.
  • GPA: Submit a screenshot or a copy of the most recent two quarters' grades.
  • Attendance: Attendance records for the last two quarters.
  • Social Security Card: Applicant's Social Security card.


Criteria for Eligibility

  • Be of African-American or Black of African descent
  • Possess a desire to build a career in the Hospitality/Visitor Industry
  • Students must be in grades 9 through 11.
  • Must have maintained a “2.0” GPA or better.
  • Attendance: No more than ten (10) unexcused absences per semester within the past year.
  • Behavior: No more than one (1) in-school suspension per quarter and no (0) out-of-school suspensions within the past year. 
  • Income eligibility: Must qualify financially for free and/or reduced lunch based upon USDA income eligibility guidelines: Please Click here for the 2024-2025 income eligibility requirements.
  • Citizenship: Must be either a United States citizen or a resident alien with a permanent social security number and NOT a temporary ID.
  • School Enrollment: Must be enrolled in a Florida public school and be on track to receive a standard high school diploma.
