M - Microbiome

The human microbiota is made up of trillions of cells, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A plethora of conditions, from obesity to anxiety, appear to be linked to the microbes inside us. Our environment, our long-term diet, stress and the drugs we take, such as antibiotics, continue to play a role as we age, meaning our microbiome can change throughout our life.

● The biggest populations of microbes reside in the gut. Other popular habitats include the skin and genitals.

● The microbial cells and their genetic material (the microbiome) live with humans from birth. This relationship is vital to normal health.

● The microbiota is important for nutrition, immunity, and effects on the brain and behavior. It is implicated in a number of diseases that cause a disturbance in the normal balance of microbes.

I - Inflammation

Inflammation has been linked to almost every disease in present day society. AGE's or advanced glycation end products, which cause aging throughout our bodies, elevated C-reactive protein, which is an advanced marker for cardiac disease, joint inflammation, skin problems, Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinsons, MS, cancer, arthritis, IBS, Crohn's, fibromyalgia and autoimmune disease, all have inflammation as the origin. The wheat in the modern diet has been genetically engineered and is present in almost everything you eat, causing inflammation in the gut and the release of the chemical zonulin which causes "leaky gut.” Food is leaked into the body through the leaky gut, and the body reacts by producing antibodies. This upregulates the immune system and causes chronic inflammation leading to a host of diseases.

N - Nutrition

A nutrient is any substance that provides nourishment, for example--the minerals that a plant takes from the soil or the constituents in food that keep the human body healthy and growing. Nutrition comes from a variety of foods, and each interacts with and provides a balance for the body. Do not neglect a wide choice of foods, including grains, fruits and vegetables and protein. Lean beef, fish, poultry, even wild game can provide great sources of protein. Plant proteins are less complete and if not researched can lack certain minerals that provide the right balance for good health, especially in children, teens, and pregnant women. Lean beef, for example, provides the equivalent of a multi-vitamin supplement, but also provides heme-iron, vitamins B-6 and B-12, zinc, niacin, and phosphorus. It also contains CLA, which is shown to be heart-healthy.

D - Detoxification

The detoxification domain of the MINDSET framework for health primarily involves decreasing or eliminating the absorption, ingestion and injection of the thousands of toxins that invade our bodies and destroy our health every day. The MINDSET framework for Detoxification will teach you to recognize and eliminate the most common sources of toxins entering your body from sources such as lotions, makeup, water bottles, cash register receipts, and thousands of products with which we come in contact every day. Keeping bad things out while facilitating the body's amazing ability to remove the toxins that get through is the focus of the Detoxification domain. It is also important to remove the non tangible toxic influences in our lives such as bad relationships and negative self talk.

EWG | Environmental Working Group

Dr. Meehan firmly believes in knowing what ingredients, chemicals, toxins, etc. are in the products we all consume. Use this link to research what’s in your products! www.EWG.org EWG is educating and empowering consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the companies they support. In response to consumer pressure, companies are giving up potentially dangerous chemical ingredients in their products and improving their practices.

S - Sleep

When you don't get enough sleep you are slow, vacant and lacking focus--much like a zombie. The United States is a sleep-deprived nation and your life may be no different. Professionals across many industries report lack of sleep as the second biggest barrier to success. Patients list sleep issues as a top health concern as well. Poor sleep habits can develop in high school, follow you to college and continue into adulthood. Everyone is busy, putting school, work, family obligations and fun before sleep. But the reality is that most adults need at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

E - Exercise

Physical wellness involves aspects of life that are necessary to keep yourself in top condition. Optimal physical wellness is developed through the combination of beneficial physical activity/exercise and healthy eating habits. Elemental components of physical wellness include building muscular strength, cardiovascular strength, endurance and flexibility. Physical wellness is also concerned with developing personal responsibility for your own health care, such as caring for minor illnesses and knowing when professional medical attention is needed. Developing physical wellness empowers you to be able to monitor your own vital signs and understand your body's warning signs. You'll understand and appreciate the relationship between sound nutrition and how your body performs. The physical benefits of looking good and feeling terrific most often lead to the psychological benefits of enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction.

T - Total Hormone Balance

As men and women age, hormone levels decline which can cause significant changes in the body, including low energy, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, and loss of libido. Hormone Optimization Therapy is used to replicate the body's natural hormone levels. Dr. Meehan firmly encourages therapies which mimic a youthful, healthy hormone pattern & structure to optimize your health. Mimicking your youthful hormone balance helps alleviate these symptoms while reducing the risk of many diseases associated with aging. Hormone therapy done correctly helps men and women reduce the risks of many of the diseases associated with aging, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and senility. The benefits include increased energy, weight loss, diminished difficulty sleeping and improved libido. Today, natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional (synthetic) hormone replacement therapy. Studies have shown the long term health benefits of natural hormone optimization reduces the risks of the diseases associated with aging (i.e. cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and senility).
