Poetry Contest Terms and Conditions

  • Eligibility
  • The contest is open only to those who sign up via our Google Form located here or by emailing your submission to [email protected] . The contest is only open to those who are 18 years or older as of date of entry and are a legal resident of Washington D.C., Maryland or Virginia. Employees of Second Story Books, their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, supplies and their immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to participate in the contest. The contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Void where prohibited.
  • Agreement to Rules
  • By participating, you agree to be fully and unconditionally bound by these rules, and you represent and warrant that you meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein. In addition, you agree to accept the decisions of Second Story Books as final and binding as it relates to the contest. The contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Void where prohibited.
  • Contest Period
  • Entries will be accepted online starting on April 2nd, 2024 and ending on May 6th, 2024. All entries must be received by May 6th 2024 at 11:59pm EST.
  • How to Enter
  • The contest must be entered by submitting a poem about books or bookstores, no longer than 500 words, using the online form provided on this Contest page, located at [here], or by emailing your submission to [email protected]. The entry must fulfill all contest requirements, as specified, to be eligible to win a prize. Entries that are not complete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of Second Story Books. You may enter only once and you must fill in the information requested. You may not enter more times than indicated by using multiple email addresses, identities or devices in an attempt to circumvent the rules. If you use fraudulent methods or otherwise attempt to circumvent the rules, your submission may be removed from eligibility at the sole discretion of Second Story Books. Entry to the contest constitutes permission for Second Story Books to use the winner's name and entry material for purposes of advertising and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
  • Prizes
  • The winner will receive a $250 Gift Card to Second Story Books. The specifics of the prize shall be solely determined by Second Story Books. No cash or other prize substitution permitted. The prize is non-transferable. No substitution of prize or transfer/assignment of prize to others or request for the cash equivalent by winners is permitted. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission for Second Story Books to use the winner's name and entry for purposes of advertising without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
  • Winner Selection and Notification
  • Winner of the contest will be selected by a panel of Second Story Books employees based on the quality of the submission. Winners will be notified via email to the email address they entered with their entry within e five(5) days following the winner selection. Second Story Books shall have no liability for a winner’s failure to receive notices due to winners’ spam, junk e-mail or other email security settings, or for winners’ provision of incorrect or otherwise non-functioning contact information. If the selected winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, fails to claim the prize within 72 hours from the time award notification was sent, or fails to timely return completed and executed declarations and / or releases as required, prize may be forfeited and an alternate winner selected.
  • Rights Granted by You
  • By entering this content you understand that Second Story Books, anyone acting on behalf of Second Story Books, or its respective licensees, successors and assigns will have the right, where permitted by law, without any further notice, review or consent, to print, publish, broadcast, distribute, and use,  in any media now known or hereafter in perpetuity and throughout the World, your entry, including, without limitation, the entry and winner's name or statements about the Sweepstakes, and biographical information as news, publicity or information and for trade, advertising, public relations, and promotional purposes without any further compensation.
  • Original Content; Ownership 
  • By participating in the Contest, each Participant guarantees that they are the exclusive owner of the copyright and all other proprietary rights in any and all materials and content submitted by the Participant to enter the Contest. The Participant further claims and guarantees that they have the right to grant to any third party the right to use, reproduce, distribute, perform and display any text or element included in the submission.  All entries must have appropriate clearances, permissions and releases PRIOR to uploading the submissio, or may be eliminated from the Contest. Any unauthorized samples or performances of another artist’s material could be subject to fines, royalty fees, and/or legal action for which the Participant agrees to indemnify, defend and hold Second Story Books harmless.   
  • Winners List
  • To obtain a copy of the winner’s name or a copy of these Official Rules, mail your request along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Emma Feliu, 12160 Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD 20852 USA. Requests must be received no later than May 30th, 2024.
