Youth Apprenticeship program gives Green Bay students a head start on their future careers
GREEN BAY - As a senior at Green Bay East High School, James Smith is already well on his way to becoming a certified electrician -- a several-years-long process. "I bend pipe, terminate circuits, put up electrical boxes and other devices," Smith explains to FOX 11.
The early start on his career is because he’s one of the many Green Bay Area Public School District students who is part of Youth Apprenticeship -- a work-based learning program that aims to grow a strong local workforce.
"It's important because it allows students to apply some of the general employability and technical skills that they’re learning in the classroom, and also connect with local employers to explore career opportunities and set themselves up for success after they graduate," says David Gordon, director of the Northeast Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Consortium.
