Regional Career Pathways

Across Wisconsin, Regional Career Pathways are helping students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real-world skills employers need and, in the process, they're changing the very definition of the public-school experience.

Whether a student dreams of becoming an engineer, teacher, healthcare professional, or skilled tradesperson, pathways help them build those skills early through coursework dual-credit classes, and hands-on experiences like Youth Apprenticeships and earning industry recognized certifications.

As the electric power industry transforms with increasing technological advancements, managed by an aging skilled workforce, the need to participate in developing a diverse and qualified talent pool is critical. The energy sector nationally, and in Wisconsin, enjoys strong employer support through membership in the national Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD).

Youth Apprenticeship program gives Green Bay students a head start on their future careers

GREEN BAY - As a senior at Green Bay East High School, James Smith is already well on his way to becoming a certified electrician -- a several-years-long process.

"I bend pipe, terminate circuits, put up electrical boxes and other devices," Smith explains to FOX 11.

The early start on his career is because he’s one of the many Green Bay Area Public School District students who is part of Youth Apprenticeship -- a work-based learning program that aims to grow a strong local workforce.

"It's important because it allows students to apply some of the general employability and technical skills that they’re learning in the classroom, and also connect with local employers to explore career opportunities and set themselves up for success after they graduate," says David Gordon, director of the Northeast Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Consortium.
