More information:

This requirement goes in to effect on June 27, 2023. Practitioners must complete this education requirement before applying for a new DEA license or before applying to have their license renewed. During the application process, practitioners will be required to check a box affirming that they have completed eight hours of training.

Practitioners are deemed to have already satisfied the education requirement if they:

  • Are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry
  • Graduated from medical, dental, physician assistant or advance practice nursing school in the United States within five years of June 27, 2023 and completed a comprehensive curriculum, that included at least eight hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorder

Other considerations for completing the education requirement include:

  • The eight hours of training can be satisfied through a combination of activities. Activities can be from multiple sources and can be presented in various formats.
  • Practitioners who previously completed training to satisfy DATA-2000 waiver requirements can count that training toward their eight hours
  • Practitioners who previously completed three hours of course work or training in pain management, palliative care and addiction to satisfy New York State's Mandatory Prescriber Education requirement can count that training toward their eight hours
  •  Practitioners who previously completed training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorder can count that training toward their eight hours

Refer to official communication from the DEA (MATE Training Letter) and SAMHSA (Recommendations for Curricular Elements in Substance Use Disorders Training) for more information.
