As we approach Giving Tuesday on December 2nd, we’re reflecting on what it truly means to build a culture of philanthropy within the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons (ASBN). Our mission has always been bigger than any single event, scholarship, or program—it’s about changing the face of neurosurgery, expanding opportunity, and making sure that Black neurosurgeons and trainees not only enter the field, but thrive in it. Philanthropy is how we get there.

Every contribution to ASBN—whether from a member, sponsor, donor, or friend—helps us:

  • Strengthen the pipeline from students and residents to established neurosurgeons through mentorship, scholarships, and professional development.
  • Support research and leadership that tackles inequities in brain and spine care, and elevates Black voices in academic and clinical spaces.
  • Create community and visibility through events, conferences, outreach, and storytelling that remind the world: we belong here, and so do those coming behind us.

When you give, you’re not just funding programs—you’re affirming potential, expanding access, and investing in legacy. A strong culture of philanthropy within ASBN means that each of us sees ourselves as stewards of the next generation: giving as we grow, and inviting others to do the same.

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to:

  • Make a tax-deductible gift at any level that is meaningful to you.
  • Renew or increase your support as a sponsor or donor to deepen your impact.
  • Share ASBN with your network, encouraging colleagues, institutions, and partners to join this work.

Together, we are building more than an organization—we are building a future where Black neurosurgeons are not the exception, but an expectation.

Give today and help us move this vision forward.

The Brain Trust: Virtual Mentorship Hours

Your journey, their experience — bridging the gap from aspiration to application.

This initiative offers students a unique opportunity to book a 30-minute Zoom session with an ASBN neurosurgeon to ask questions, seek personalized guidance, and gain insight into the neurosurgery pathway — from early interest through residency and beyond.

Please note: Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Only verified U.S.-based ASBN student members are eligible. These 2-hour mentorship blocks are open to students who were not matched with a mentor in our formal NeuroMentoring Matters pod program, as well as new students looking to connect.

Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Brain Health: Why Representation in Neurosurgery Matters

As we honor Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, let’s take a closer look at how these conditions are more connected than most realize—particularly through their impact on the brain and the role neurosurgeons play. When most people think about diabetes, the brain isn’t the first organ that comes to mind. Blood sugar, circulation, or vision issues are usually top of mind. Likewise, when Alzheimer’s enters the conversation, we tend to think about memory loss and aging. Rarely do we connect the two — but the truth is, both conditions deeply affect brain health, and both disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities.

And while diabetes and Alzheimer’s are two separate health issues with distinct awareness efforts, they intersect in meaningful ways when it comes to prevention, neurological care, and long-term outcomes — especially in underrepresented populations.
