Library Staff Member to the Rescue Adrianna Ramirez Recreation Services
Recently Adrianna, who is a Library Assistant II in Youth Services, went above and beyond to assist a couple who were unable to locate their teenage son when they came to pick him up at the library. An announcement was made, but when he failed to respond, Adrianna searched the building until she found him in a study room cubicle with his headphones on. Well done Adrianna! |

| Endangered Atala Butterflies Spotted in Town City Horticulturist/Arborist Dawn Sinka's keen eyes spotted Atala butterflies (Eumaeus atala) in town recently! The small, endangered butterfly is native to south Florida. The photos show the butterflies feeding on Spanish Needles (Bidens alba). It’s larval (caterpillar) host plant is the Coontie (Zamia pumila), which has been around since the time of the dinosaurs and can be found at the south entrance to the Hillsboro/El Rio Park as well as Gumbo Limbo and other places around town. When you see Coontie and Spanish Needles close together, look for the small Atala, spotting one is a rare treat. Thanks to Dawn and Landscape Architect Curtis Cahoon for the great pictures. |

Please Congratulate Greg Stevens on His Promotion to Recreation Services Director!
Greg has been serving as the Acting Recreation Services Director since July 2022 but began his career with the City in October 1991. Over the time of his employment with the City, he has readily assumed responsibility for functions that were outside the normal scope of duties for his job, allowing him to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Department’s operations and prepare him for this new challenge.
In addition to his experience and dedication to the City, Greg’s willingness to listen to staff’s ideas and concerns, his ability to collaborate with other City employees and external organizations and his vision related to the future of the parks and recreation programming made him the best person for the job! Well done Greg! |

And Congratulations to all the employees who recently received a promotion. |

Say hello to Raquel Anaya! She recently joined the Human Resources Department as a Compensation Analyst. Learn a little more about her. |
| What will your new job with the City entail? My role as Compensation Analyst will entail working on new hire employment offers, maintaining the Pay & Classification Plan, and a variety of compensation analysis and job study projects. |
|
| Are you a Florida Native? I’m a long-time Florida resident after a brief start in New York. I grew up in Cooper City and completed my undergraduate degree at FIU while living in Miami. Currently, I live about 10 minutes from the beach in Delray and love spending time in our beautiful parks or eating empanadas at the Delray Green Market.
What do you like to do during your time away from the office? I really enjoy live music and will travel near and far for a concert or a comedy show, or just a good cup of coffee. I’m also keen on re-reading novels and baking for any occasion.
How did you become interested in Human Resources? I made my start in HR somewhat by accident, my very first temporary assignment out of undergrad was in an HR office. It was meant to be a two-week assignment for light filing, and I ended up staying there for nearly two years. I’m very excited to bring my Oracle HCM and compensation management skills honed thru my experience in recruitment and development operations to the city! |

| Thank you for your service with the City, and best of luck in your new endeavors!

| Starting on January 1, 2023, I decided to take the 7-Day Happiness Challenge I read about in the New York Times. It’s designed to help you identify areas of your life in which you would like to be more connected, because according to research, strong relationships are the key ingredient to a happy life and can determine whether we feel fulfilled. You take a little quiz, and then each day there are suggestions for how to connect more – including tips on “small talk,” (awkward) and “the power of the 8-minute phone call.” (Can’t we just text?) These “tips” are for personal and professional connections.
Since we spend most of our time at work and are separated by departments, buildings and schedules, there is some extra effort required to meet colleagues outside of our immediate departments - and there are a lot of us - over 1,800 employees in the CBR family.
So, in the spirit of connecting more at work, I’ve resolved to have more “in person” meetings, turn on my camera for Teams meetings, and engage in more small talk to meet and get to know more CBR colleagues. I know our |
|
|
| department is planning more out of the office get togethers, like happy hour and lunches, and HR is also planning more employee events to increase camaraderie, all things to look forward to in 2023. I hope you’ll consider joining me in this New Year’s resolution to make more connections at work.
As luck would have it, we’ll all have an opportunity to meet in person at the upcoming Employee Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday, January 11 at Spanish River Park. This is a fun, annual event that recognizes employees celebrating milestone anniversaries from 35 years to 5 years, and it’s a great opportunity to reconnect with people we haven’t seen in a while and meet employees who are new to CBR or work in a different location. Lunch will be served from 11-2, so I hope you’ll take the time to come by, grab a bite to eat, congratulate your colleagues, and have some small talk! We’ll look forward to seeing you there. |

| Gumbo Limbo is proud to announce its Volunteer of the Month – Beth Vogel |
|
|
Beth is a very valuable asset to the Gumbo Limbo Team. She donates her time at least twice a week to educate at the aquariums and facilitates the Fish Feeding presentations and Turtle Talks. Beth also played an integral role in the Haunted Hammock Halloween event, creating the amazing costumes on display. She is well versed in a lot of volunteer assignments around the center and is always willing to help where she is needed, having been with Gumbo Limbo for a little over a year and donated over 220 hours during this time.
