Apps--Appetizers or Telemedicine Tools?

Did you know that an ‘app’ is no longer just that delicious bite-sized pre-dinner treat?

Our smart phones now come pre-loaded with numerous apps, or little tools that allow us to text our friends, search the internet and even shop on Amazon. Thanks to another tool in our telemedicine toolbox, you can now instantly send important health information to your doctor—no matter where you are. Data such as blood pressure readings, blood glucose levels, cpap reports, and real time EKGs can be automatically transmitted to our doctors on a regular basis via a medical ‘app’ can be downloaded right to your smart phone home screen. These apps allow for better informed healthcare recommendations without leaving the comforts of your own home.

Just as we text or email our friends, telemedicine apps and interactive programs enable us to securely communicate with our doctors any time, day or night.

Text communication with your doctor can be useful for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Appointment Scheduling & Reminders
  • Prescription Refills
  • Quick Non-urgent Medical Questions
  • Test Results & Explanations
  • Symptom Monitoring to track progress of your condition
  • Post-Appointment Support & Instructions

While medical communication has made significant strides, healthcare can still be complex. Reach out to Dr. T at ConnectCare MD for help today.

Telemedicine: The Return of House Calls?

Remember when “Skype” was the rage during COVID? Even though Microsoft just announced that Skype will soon retire, other online video conferencing platforms remain popular and vibrant, especially telemedicine related platforms. Although the use of telehealth visits are declining since their peak during the pandemic, a recent study reports that about 20% of surveyed adults reported the use of telehealth in the previous 4 weeks.

Telemedicine is the toolbox that gives us the ability to communicate with our medical providers without even leaving the comfort of our own home. Think “house call meets high tech”. With just Wi-Fi access and a smart phone or computer, your doctor can now ‘step’ into YOUR office or home for your next medical visit.

But are virtual telemedicine visits right for you?

✅ Advantages

  • Convenience – See a doctor from home, avoid traffic and parking challenges
  • Time-Saving – No waiting rooms, shorter appointment times.
  • Cost-Effective – Saves money on transportation and childcare.
  • Access to Specialists – Connect with specialists who may not be nearby.
  • Less Exposure to Illness – Avoid waiting rooms where germs spread.

❌ Disadvantages

  • Not Suitable for All Conditions – Physical exams, tests, or procedures require in-person care.
  • Technology Barriers – Requires a device, internet access, and some tech skills.
  • Limited Physical Assessment – The doctor cannot listen to your heart, lungs, or feel for issues.
  • Privacy Concerns – Online security risks or lack of a private space at home.
  • Insurance & Cost Uncertainty – Coverage varies

It is important to note however that telemedicine visits are never appropriate for emergent evaluations. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, acute abdominal pain, significant trauma or believe that you may be experiencing a heart attack or stroke, call 911 right away.

Need help navigating your next telemedicine visit? ConnectCare MD can help.
