About the Central Area Senior Center, CASC, The Central

The CASC is a non-profit community organization. The Central Area Senior Center’s (The Central) legacy of community service began in 1968 when African American civic activists observed that the Central District needed a place for our elders to meet and socialize. They leased the empty property at 500 30th Avenue South and petitioned the City to support this vital community need. The City responded. In 1975, Mayor Wes Uhlman used money supported by Washington’s voters to buy the property and lease it to The Central. He wrote in a letter to the City Council that this purchase would establish a “permanent home” for The Central. This became a reality in 2020 with the building and facility ownership acquired from the City of Seattle and turned over to the community under the stewardship of the CASC.

From our beginnings, we knew The Central would be a place of support, community, fellowship, and celebration. That is still our purpose, and we intend to hold onto it long into the future.

The CASC reaches over 10,000 people each year, has a growing staff of 11+, hundreds of volunteers, and an annual budget of $1.25 million. The CASC is an Equal Opportunity Employer working towards a culturally diverse workplace. The Central is an inclusive community that provides social, physical, and educational activities focused on the needs of older adults. We work to fight isolation, build camaraderie, and enrich each other’s lives. We provide a variety of programs for adults in the areas of fitness, a variety of cultural programs in the arts, card games, Bid Whist, Dominos, Bridge, memory loss, Live Music monthly, social opportunities and social services, including a daily hot lunch program.
