Kianna's Story

Needing a ride and some help, Kianna found a nice couple who drove her from Indiana to Nebraska where she found a shelter.

At the shelter, Kianna struggled with her mental health. Her situation had not improved and she needed intervention. She asked for help and was admitted to a mental health program. Kianna was doing well, but quickly discovered she was going to age out of the program she was in. She had very little lift skills and was questioning how she was going to be on her own. "I had no idea how to care for myself, I had no idea where to go or who to ask for help. I was always handed the solution and there was never any teaching me how to fix the problem." Kianna said.

After doing some research, looking for solutions to fix her immediate housing issues, Kianna found YES. She came to the Street Outreach Center looking for help and was met with open arms and smiles. There was no judgment, just relief.

Being pregnant, staff encouraged Kianna to apply for YES' Maternity Group Home (MGH). MGH program provides services to runaway and homeless youth, ages 16-21 who are pregnant or parenting and may not otherwise be able to access services. Residents live in a family style residence for a maximum of 18 month and work closely with case manager to set and accomplish several goals. It was here Kianna learned how to survive and succeed. Through working with staff and building trusting relationships again, Kianna graduated high school and went on to trade school where she is planning on getting her

degree in carpentry. "YES is honestly one of the best things that is out here. They taught me how to cook, plan, save money, get a job, keep a job and be the best mom I can be. I don't know where I would be without having found them. I can breathe at night knowing I am safe and doing well and will continue to do well."
