Autumn in Moraga is particularly charming. The red and golden trees drape over the Moraga Valley and frame the grounds of St. Mary’s College, Moraga Country Club, and Moraga Commons—bathing familiar places in a soft, golden light. The season kicks off with the Pear & Wine Festival, Community Service Day, and Trunk-or-Treat, when families gather across town, capturing the warmth and connection that make this community such a wonderful place to raise children. It’s a season that naturally invites reflection—on what we’ve built, what we’ve been blessed with, and what we want to sustain.

As families plan for year-end—reviewing finances, preparing for holidays, and setting goals for the year ahead—it’s also a meaningful time to think about generosity in a more intentional way.

Beyond annual donations, there are thoughtful ways to align charitable impact with the structures you already have in place:

  • Appreciated Assets. Gifts of long-term appreciated stock, real estate, or other investments that have grown in value can be a tax-smart way to support MEF while preserving more of your capital for future giving.

  • Donor-Advised Funds. If you already have a DAF, a year-end grant to MEF can be a simple, high-impact way to reinvest in local education.

  • Beneficiary Designations. It’s easy to update a beneficiary designation on your retirement accounts or life-insurance policies to include MEF as a partial or contingent beneficiary. This usually requires only a brief form or online update with your provider—no attorney needed.

  • Family Trusts. If you already have a family trust, your attorney can help you name MEF as a partial or contingent beneficiary during your next update. It’s recommended to review your family trust every few years to ensure it continues to serve your family’s needs and stays current with the law.

  • Charitable Trusts. Advanced tools such as charitable remainder or lead trusts can integrate income planning for you or your loved ones with charitable giving—creating both financial benefits and a lasting legacy that supports MEF and other causes you value.

And as you review your plans, consider making it a family practice. Many parents use this season to engage their children in choosing one or two causes to support—a “generosity project” that builds empathy, gratitude, and awareness. When giving is shared across generations, it becomes part of a family’s story, not just a financial transaction. It reminds us that legacy isn’t only about what we leave behind, but about how we live out our values together—right here in the community that shaped us.
