Pink Minimalist Breast Cancer Awareness Facebook Post.jpg

This month’s edition is PINK and personal. As we round out October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, I can’t help but reflect on my own experience as a Breast Cancer “Thriver” and why the time is now to ensure that you are up to date on YOUR annual mammogram.

My Story- When "Routine" Wasn't Routine

On July 21, 2020 I went to my 14th annual routine screening mammogram, but this time turned out to be anything but routine.  Unlike the last thirteen, I didn't get a little pink "see ya next year" note congratulating me on a normal result. Instead, a call came that changed everything— my mammogram revealed a “suspicious” finding that would later be diagnosed as early-stage breast cancer.

With support of amazing family members, friends, doctors and a year of surgeries, chemo and radiation I am grateful to say that I am now one of over 4 Million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

A mammogram saved my life -- and could save yours.

I’ll say that again, one 30-minute appointment once a year could save YOUR life too.

Better yet — grab your bestie, sisters, colleagues, & friends and make it a group effort. Partner with one of two local Mammo Vans and schedule your mammograms together. The life you save may be your own.

No excuses — get your mammogram now. I recommend it not just as a doctor, but as a proud pink thriver!

Early Detection Saves Lives — Here’s Why

  • 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • 60% of breast cancers are detected by a screening mammography.
  • 85% of breast cancers occur in women without a family history of breast cancer.
  • Only 5-10% of patients with breast cancer have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.

The data is simple and compelling. Annual screening mammograms result in early diagnosis. Early diagnosis improves overall survival. When breast cancer is diagnosed early, survival rates approach 99%, but once breast cancer has spread to other organs, survival rates are a dismal 31%.

And if you or a loved one ever face follow-up appointments or need extra support along the way, ConnectCare MD is here to help.
