Traditional Yoga meets modern pain science to treat chronic pain

Pain is a fundamental and important aspect of our well-being. Its significance cannot be overstated. Pain is a real experience, even when medical professionals cannot identify its source or assign a specific diagnosis to your condition.

Most importantly, pain is not an unchanging, fixed state, regardless of how long you have endured it. Pain is changeable.

For a long time, there was a prevailing belief that pain equated to physical damage. However, modern science has revealed that this notion is not necessarily accurate, particularly when dealing with chronic pain. It is entirely possible to experience intense pain without any physical damage, and, conversely, one can have significant physical damage with minimal or no associated pain.

Yoga for Pain Management is an individualized program combining Yoga and modern pain science to help manage and lower chronic pain.

First, we look into the science behind the pain alarm system, see what the difference is between acute and chronic pain and how we can change pain. Understanding pain has proven to be an important step in the pain recovery process as recent research has shown that understanding the neurobiology of pain has led to a reduction in pain intensity, disability, pain catastrophization and improved movement.

The sessions center on the following key elements:

  • Gaining a deeper understanding of the science underpinning pain. Because understand pain is therapeutic.
  • Learning about the biopsychosocial approach to pain management and how yoga is well versed in this approach.
  • Exploring a diverse range of practices to nurture present-moment awareness, regulation and discernment, all designed to influence and manage pain and its flare-ups.
  • Specifically learning yoga practices inspired by scientific insights, including:
  • How to move when pain persists
  • Exploring one's “Edge” to positively impact and change pain and bodily sensations
  • Gentle asanas (postures), sequences, and mindful movement and flows
