Melissa Johannes

LECTURER IN LEGAL STUDIES

LGLS 189A: Business Law

Melissa Johannes has had a remarkable journey in the field of legal studies, with a unique background in electrical engineering that eventually led her to specialize in business law. Initially pursuing a career in engineering, she developed a deep passion for the intersection of science, technology, business strategy, and communications. Melissa's career path took her straight to her current role as counsel at law firm Wolf Greenfield, where she combines her technical expertise with her legal knowledge to navigate the complex world of patent law.

As a former Guberman Fellow, Melissa had the opportunity to connect with students on a personal level and create engaging learning experiences. She believes in making legal education interactive and relevant, often linking class topics to current events. Her dedication to teaching extends to her course, LGLS 189A (Business Law), where she covers a wide range of business law topics. Melissa hopes to equip her students with the skills to identify legal risks and opportunities in the business world, drawing from real-world examples like Snapchat's early legal troubles and Apple's patent strategies.

Outside of her teaching and research, Melissa is a passionate explorer, having traveled to diverse places around the world, from Kenya to the Galapagos. She also remains deeply connected to her community, volunteering at a local cat shelter and reading to students at the Stanley School in Waltham. Melissa's diverse background and commitment to education make her a valuable asset to the legal studies program at Brandeis and the community at large. The legal studies program extends a warm welcome to Melissa Johannes and eagerly looks forward to her valuable contributions to our students!
