🌷 Spring Cleaning for Your Health: Simple Steps That Make a Big Difference

April is the season of fresh starts. As you open the windows and begin spring cleaning around your home, take a minute for a simple medication related clean-up can make a meaningful difference in your health.

đź’Š Clean Up Your Medication List

Medication lists can quickly become outdated, especially when multiple providers are involved.

I frequently see extensive medication lists with:

  • Medications that are no longer needed
  • Duplicate prescriptions from different providers
  • Missing or incorrect dosing information

This month, take a few minutes to:

✔️ Write down everything you take (prescriptions, supplements, over-the-counter medications)

✔️ Make an appointment with your provider with ONE purpose: to evaluate your medication list

✔️ Ask: “Do I still need all of these?”

A current, accurate list helps reduce confusion and improves the quality of every medical visit.

Refresh Your Medicine Cabinet

Just because a medication is readily available on your drug store shelf doesn’t mean it’s risk-free. These products can expire, interact with prescription medications, and still benefit from periodic review.

Expired medications may lose effectiveness and, in some cases, may not be safe.

While you’re spring cleaning:

✔️ Check expiration dates

✔️ Safely dispose of outdated medications

✔️ Keep only what you actually use

A quick check now can prevent avoidable complications later!

Now What? Where Do Old Medications Go?

Take a moment to dispose of medications safely and responsibly—there are many convenient options close to home. Here are a few local places to get you started:

  • Over 20 Monroe County Walgreens locations and the Gates and Brighton CVS Stores
  • Police Departments including Fairport, East Rochester, Brighton and Brockport
  • All Monroe County Sheriff's Departments
  • Monroe County Eco-Park
  • St. John Fisher University (Haffey Hall)
  • You can even dispose of medications without ever leaving your home ! Check out the NYS mail back option here
