Monica C. Lozano is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of College Futures Foundation, a position she held for five years until August 2022. College Futures Foundation is a statewide private foundation committed to closing equity gaps in California’s public institutions of higher education by eliminating the structural barriers that inhibit low income and students of color from meeting their postsecondary aspirations.
Prior to joining College Futures Foundation, Lozano spent thirty years in media, twenty of these as editor, publisher, and Chief Executive Officer of La Opinión, the country’s leading Spanish language daily newspaper. She went on to become CEO and Chair of the Board of the parent company, ImpreMedia, and subsequently Chair of US Hispanic Media, Inc until she retired in 2015. Known for its award-winning editorial content, Lozano guided the company through its evolution from a newspaper company into a national multi-media content company dedicated to serving the Latino community through relevant, unique, high-quality content that informs, educates, and empowers. She continues to serve as a strategic advisor to several news, information, and media companies.
In 2015, Lozano co-founded the Aspen Institute Latinos and Society program which is dedicated to advancing the economic prosperity and opportunity of the Latino community in the United States. Lozano chairs the boards of the Weingart Foundation and the Los Angeles Local News Initiative and serves on the board of Apple, Target and Bank of America. Prior board service includes The Walt Disney Company, chair of the University of California Board of Regents, chair of UnidosUS, Governor Gavin Newson’s Jobs and Economic Recovery Task Force and President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board and Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.
Lozano has received multiple awards and distinctions and has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Latinas. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
