After a successful 30-year career in primary care, emergency medicine, and hospital-based care in Rochester, NY, I transitioned from the bedside back to the office to continue my passion for helping patients through ConnectCare MD. As your personal physician liaison, I attend doctor appointments with you when family can't, then share an easy to understand report with both you and your family the very next day.

Don’t Let Your Medications Give Your Wallet a Headache: Dr. T’s Tips for Saving Big on Prescription Costs!

It seems like we’re taking more and more medicines these days—and they’re getting more expensive, too. That can really add up and take a toll on your budget. Here are Dr. T's money saving tips to help:

  • Generic Drugs--ask your doctor or pharmacist if a generic version of your medication is available and appropriate. Just like their brand name counterparts, generic drugs must be FDA approved with the exact quality standards containing the same active ingredient, with the same dosage/strength. Sometimes they are even made in the same factory as brand name drugs!
  • Substitutions--The latest and greatest medication for your condition may not be any better than the medications that have been around for a while. Ask your doctor if an equally effective in-network or cheaper alternative is appropriate for you.
  • Shop around--Different pharmacies may charge different amounts for your medications. Check out the price differences (without insurance) for the 3 most commonly prescribed drugs in America today:

  • While you won't find "clearance sales" at the pharmacy counter, believe it or not, coupons are available. If you want to know the lowest price of your medications check out www.rxsaver.com. Think of it like google shopping for but for your specific medications.

Out of Business, Out of Pills: What to Do When Your Pharmacy Closes

While they used to be on every corner, Rite-Aid, Walgreens and CVS have closed multiple locations in and around Rochester. Avoid the “Where are my meds?” mystery—here’s how to stay ahead and never miss a refill.

  • All Rite-Aid pharmacies will be soon closed and are transferring active prescriptions elsewhere. If you didn't receive the text or letter about the transferred location of your prescription, ask your new pharmacist or physician to transfer the prescription to your new pharmacy.
  • Notify each doctor of your new pharmacy at your next appointment.
  • If a pharmacy is no longer in your neighborhood, consider the home delivery option for continued convenience from your new pharmacy (available at Wegmans, Walgreens, Costco and even Amazon).
  • Be proactive-you never know if your pharmacy may be next. Ask your pharmacist for a printed list of your current medications, medication history and medication allergy list.
  • Keep a copy of this list with you at all times, and a second copy with your medications at home.

More Than Just Pills: Why Your Pharmacist Deserves a Second Look

Pharmacists are licensed Doctors of Pharmacy (PharmDs). They complete 6+ years of academic and hands-on clinical education to become experts in your medications and how they work.

But today's pharmacists do so much more than just fill prescriptions.

  • Pharmacists are a wealth of knowledge regarding medication usage, side effects, interactions, and proper dosages.
  • They help prevent harmful drug interactions.
  • Pharmacist check new prescriptions to ensure they don’t conflict with your current medications or cause harmful interactions.
  • In today's fragmented medical system, pharmacists are often the one consistent professional who knows your entire medication list--even when they are prescribed by different providers in different systems.
  • Keep you up to date on your vaccinations including flu, COVID-19, shingles and more.
  • Not sure which cold medicine or pain reliever is safest with your current meds? A pharmacist can guide you.
  • Convenience--Unlike doctor’s offices, some pharmacies (like CVS in our own backyard of Brighton) are open 24/7, even on holidays—and just a phone call away for any questions.

Next time you pick up a prescription, take a moment to talk to your pharmacist—you might walk away with more than just your meds!
