In 1920, Diana Agabeg Apcar made history as the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Japan, becoming the first Armenian woman diplomat and one of the first women to hold any diplomatic post in the twentieth century. Her legacy of strength and service continued through her family, culminating in a remarkable moment when Lucille Apcar, Diana’s granddaughter, decided to leave the residual of her estate to AIWA through the San Francisco chapter.
In May 2021, AIWA leaders, Christine Soussa and Laura Dirtadian visited Lucille in Mariposa, California, meeting a vibrant, sharp-witted 92-year-old whose life journey from Yokohama to Yosemite embodied the spirit of women’s entrepreneurship and resilience. Their day together was filled with stories, laughter, tears, and memories of Diana Apcar’s pioneering life and Lucille’s own commitment to uplifting women.
Lucille’s extraordinary gift will fuel AIWA’s mission to champion women entrepreneurs and women-led projects, ensuring that both Diana and Lucille Apcar’s legacies continue to inspire and empower Armenian women worldwide.
