While facing a historic deficit of nearly $360 million, Mayor Sheng Thao released her proposed two year budget. I appreciate that the mayor used every possible tool to close the deficit and maintain current city of Oakland employees — from the hiring slowdown announced in March to freezing vacancies and attrition. Your voice and advocacy is needed to ensure that proposed funding strategies are also aligned with the priorities submitted in the District 6 Fiscal Year 2023-2025 Budget Memo. Please register and join me at the D6 Budget Town hall and automatically be entered to win a pair of Oakland A's tickets.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

From left: Council member Treva Reid, Sima and Parvin Patel and Council member Kevin Jenkins

I was very excited to be pictured with business owner Sima Patel and Council member Treva Reid for Asian Pacific Heritage Month. I've known Sima’s longtime work in the community with Ridgemont Hospitality. I was also proud to present a resolution to David Duong whose family escaped the Vietnam war and settled in the Bay Area. Mr. Duong is the CEO and President of California Waste Solutions. His work in the recycling and waste management industry has not only contributed to environmental sustainability but also created numerous opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. I was pleased to honor them both and the many achievements of AAPI communities.
